Mangaluru, May 13: Several parts of the Dakshina Kannada (DK) district experienced heavy showers on Sunday evening, with some areas even witnessing rain accompanied by hailstones.
Locations including Sullia, Beltangady, Dharmasthala, Guruvayanakere, Uppinangady, Karaya Kalleri, Bandaru, Perne, Ilanthila, Puttur, Balnadu, Kadaba, Bantwal, B C Road, Subramanya, Panja, Vittal, Kanyana, Manjeshwar, Bayaru, and Balpa received heavy rainfall along with strong winds.
While Mangaluru city remained cloudy in the evening, it did not experience rainfall. However, some parts received rain late on Saturday night.
Puttur witnessed a heavy downpour for half an hour, accompanied by large hailstones. Arecanut farms were affected in Ilanthila, and rain caused disruptions to electricity and internet connections. Additionally, the high-velocity wind led to the flight of cement sheets from Kamala's house in Bappalige, while Shobha's house suffered partial damage due to a fallen tree.
A significant tree fell across the Mani-Mysuru highway at Parivarakana in Aletty village, briefly disrupting traffic flow. Sullia police, Mescom personnel, and locals collaborated to clear the tree and restore smooth traffic movement.
Kadaba, Bilinele, Subramanya, Panja, Kaniyoor, and Alangaru also experienced heavy rainfall. An autorickshaw was struck by a falling tree at Kenya on the Mardhala-Konaje connecting road, and lightning struck and felled a coconut tree in Kombaru.
Poor road conditions on the B C Road-Addahole highway caused a car to overturn at Kudrebettu in Kalladka. Waterlogging on the highway due to heavy rain exacerbated the situation. A Tata Nano car, driven at high speed by Tausif, overturned, though fortunately, he escaped without injuries. The lack of asphalt on the service road in Kalladka is causing inconvenience to vehicle riders and drivers.
