Mangaluru, May 11: Locals protested against the construction of an overbridge at Gurpur Kaikamba, situated on the outskirts of the city, as part of the Bikkarnakatte-Karkala national highway project.
The Kaikamba Nagarika Horata Samiti halted the construction work and staged a protest at the site, alleging that the overbridge was being built without adhering to scientific standards. They argued that closing both lanes in Kaikamba town for the construction of the overbridge was not appropriate and demanded that pillars be placed underneath it. The locals expressed their frustration towards NHAI officials.
The protest committee declared that they would not allow work to continue until representatives from NHIPD visited the site. The ongoing construction of the overbridge at Kaikamba as part of the Bikkarnakatte-Karkala national highway project prompted the locals to stage a protest and halt the work.
When the contractor arrived at the site, a verbal altercation ensued between the contractor and the locals. Police intervened to pacify the situation.
