Puttur: UPCL may be Given Conditional Approval for Second Unit: CM

Puttur, Oct 12: Chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday October 11 said that the Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) may be given conditional approval for its second unit at Nandikur.
He was speaking during his visit to Puttur to take part in various programmes, including inauguration of police outpost at Ishwaramangala.
He said that government plans to make a study of the possible environment effects of the second unit and added that the company will be asked to take care of the environment issues.
Speaking on the opposition to the proposal from Pejavar Swamiji, he said that the unit was essential as the state is facing intense power shortage. The government will try to balance the environment aspects and need for power, he said.
He also said that government is in talks with sugar factories to generate power from molasses.
The CM said that government is trying hard to solve the power related issues. The Government has had discussions with Chattisgrah CM Raman Singh. The Chattisgrah Government has agreed to supply 400mw power supply to Karnataka. However, only 200mw power is being supplied due to lack of additional power evacuation routes, he informed.
On the problems faced by areca nut growers, said that the compensatory measures would be provided for areca nut growers who suffered losses due to prevalent Koleroga or Mahali, a major disease of areca nut causing serious problems, only after the concerned district officer provides a detailed report on the loss occurred in the region.
He also informed that he has ordered the co-operative department to temporarily withhold the loans of areca nut growers and help them financially. The state Governmeny would always support the areca nut farmers, he assured.

Speaking about the death of ANF Staff Mahadeva S Mane who died during a Naxal encounter in the thick forest of Manjala area in Navoor village of Savanalu taluk, Cm said that the exact truth would come out only after thorough investigation. The Government would never bend to naxal attacks. The police too are adopting various ways to eliminate the naxal acts, he added.
