Puttur: UPCL may be Given Conditional Approval for Second Unit: CM

Puttur, Oct 12: Chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday October 11 said that the Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) may be given conditional approval for its second unit at Nandikur.

He was speaking during his visit to Puttur to take part in various programmes, including inauguration of police outpost at Ishwaramangala. 

He said that government plans to make a study of the possible environment effects of the second unit and added that the company will be asked to take care of the environment issues.

Speaking on the opposition to the proposal from Pejavar Swamiji, he said that the unit was essential as the state is facing intense power shortage. The government will try to balance the environment aspects and need for power, he said.

He also said that government is in talks with sugar factories to generate power from molasses.

The CM said that government is trying hard to solve the power related issues. The Government has had discussions with Chattisgrah CM Raman Singh. The Chattisgrah Government has agreed to supply 400mw power supply to Karnataka. However, only 200mw power is being supplied due to lack of additional power evacuation routes, he informed.

On the problems faced by areca nut growers, said that the compensatory measures would be provided for areca nut growers who suffered losses due to prevalent Koleroga or Mahali, a major disease of areca nut causing serious problems, only after the concerned district officer provides a detailed report on the loss occurred in the region.

He also informed that he has ordered the co-operative department to temporarily withhold the loans of areca nut growers and help them financially. The state Governmeny would always support the areca nut farmers, he assured.

    Why CM is considering for second unit at the same area? There are several places in Udupi District which are environmentally friendly to such projects, such as undeveloped Islands which doesn't got connection to other main land, no electricity etc.etc. take our two islands of Mulki - Swamila Kudru and Channai Kudru.We are ready to give for this project with good compensation.

    Did UPCL Commit earlier towards the environmental guidelines?If no then they had FMS(fail to maintain Standard) stipulated by Govt and concerned ministry of environment.Certainly we need power very badly and the consumption will
    not descend anyway but equally we want live peacefully and healthy .That is what Govt and Company need to emphasize about the very crucial project.

    Mr.Jawar D'Souza, M'lore/Doha..don't worry there are ample space available up above in moon..only for Rs.1750/- per acre..have your freedom over there..coastal area will next industrial hub of karnataka.. good opportunities emerge in near future..most of the mangalorens are
    staying abroad.. what's the use of so many land lying waste!!

    One plant has done enough damage to the envoirenment, now they need another Plant. They will not finish untill whole of Coastal area is destroyed.

    It is good to know government wont bend to naxal pressure. But government also need to learn not to bend to pressures from business interests in the state. In most probability the second unit will not come into operation very soon because the source of funding for the UPCL are in jail in Hyderabad and being investigated for the money trial.
