Bengaluru, Feb 29: Bengaluru Railway police have arrested an accused on charges of cheating more than 250 women with promise of marrying them.
The accused is Naresh Puri Goswamy, who was allegedly posing as a customs officer and cheating women.
He used to open fake accounts in matrimonial websites and get acquainted with widows and divorced women. He used to later ask them to come to Bengaluru for discussions. It is said that he used to give various reasons during the talks and escape.
During the operation, the Bengaluru railway police came to know that the accused had cheated and promised marraige to more than 250 women. He had called a Coimbatore-based woman to Bengaluru recently for discussions. He had allegedly told the woman during the talks that he has to leave his uncle at the railway station and that he needs to reserve his ticket but had forgotten his purse at home. He then took money from the woman and escaped.
Naresh had two SIM cards and he used to also call up women whose profile was found in Hindi newspaper advertisements and speak to them. He had reportedly joined the Agar Senaji Vaivahika Manch WhatsApp group where he identified a few women, spoke to them with the promise of marrying them.
The police came to know during interrogation that he had cheated as many as 56 women from Rajasthan, 32 each from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, 17 from Karnataka, 16 from Madhya Pradesh, 13 from Maharashtra and 11 women from Gujarat. Further interrogation is on.
