Udupi, Feb 28: Lalithamma (44) from Shivamogga district met with a road accident. She was severely injured and admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal for further treatment. Despite the doctors’ effort to salvage her, the prognosis was poor and she did not show any signs of recovery. Lalithamma was declared brain dead by the panel of expert doctors as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 officially twice.
The deceased’s family members expressed their willingness to donate viable organs to save the lives of other patients. As per Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bengaluru protocols and decisions, the donated lungs were sent to KIMS Hospital Hyderabad, liver to Sparsh Hospital Bengaluru and one kidney to Unity Hospital Mangaluru. Another kidney and corneas were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for the registered patients.
Medical superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, "The organ donation is a great work to save lives, and people should encourage such good things. He thanked Lalithamma’s family who decided to do this noble cause.
