Udupi, Sep 6: "There are opportunities in cricket for one who has earnest interest and determination to pursue it as a career. One can reach the top provided he or she develops thirst for excellence," said former Indian cricketer Syed Kirmani.
He was speaking after inaugurating the St Mary's Cricket Academy at Shirva here, on Tuesday September 6. The Academy was set up at St Mary’s College premises by its Alumni Association.
“The teachers and parents of students need to understand the preferences of modern youth and support them in their interests. Times have changed and it's wiser to move along,” urged Kirmani.
St Mary’s education institutions correspondent Fr Stany Tauro, in his presidential address, hoped that at least a few players that will be trained at the Academy will make it to the national team.
Entrepreneurs Pramod Madhwaraj and Glen Dias conveyed best wishes for the Academy.
Mangalore University cricket team former captain Vijay Alva, St Mary’s Alumni Association treasurer George Fernandes, and honorary president Felix Andrade were present on the dais.
National cricketer Denver Mendonca was felicitated during the programme.
St Mary’s Alumni Association president Dr Gururaj welcomed the gathering. Academy president Simon D’Souza delivered the introductory address. Secretary Mathias Lobo proposed the vote of thanks. Norbert Machado and Melvyn Aranha compered the programme.
