Udupi: Teacher's Day Tragedy - Five Including Lecturers Injured in Car-Bus Collision

Udupi, Sep 5: Five persons including four teachers were injured in a ghastly mishap that occurred between a Maruti Baleno and a private express bus near Udyavar junction on NH 66, here on Monday September 5 morning.
 
Katpady SVS Pre-University College teachers Jadabharata Sharma, Dilip Kumar Bansode and Shantaram P, Kota Pre-University College teacher Rajgopal and Vivek Krishna were injured in the accident. 

Jadabharata Sharma, Vivek Krishna and Rajgopal are in critical condition, informed police sources.
 
The accident took place when the teachers were on their way to a protest rally by lecturers.
 
Eye-witnesses said that recklessness of the bus driver while overtaking resulted in the tragedy. Traffic was obstructed for nearly an hour on Monday morning.
 
The car was badly crushed under the impact, however, the bus was only partly damaged.

Police personnel led by Kaup sub-inspector Mohan Kottari and locals assisted in taking the injured to hospital.
 
Kaup police registered a case in this regard.

The protest was later cancelled as a mark of respect to the injured. However, the organisers did submit a memorandum to the deputy commissioner outlining their demands.

    This is the second accident within days gap on the same spot. RTO generates revenue by selling Permits to the buses giving them seconds gaps. To escape from the chasing bus behind they have to press on gas..... RTO is well aware about the timings and the reasons for the accidents.... Whom to blame. This is the only place where private buses are operated and contributes maximum revenue by playing with life…

    Wish & Pray for their speedy recovery. The traffic between Byndoor to Mangalore, Manipal to Mangalore via Udupi should be monitored strictly. Concerned RTO/Traffic Police is responsible for all accidents. There is no control of so called Dynamic,Engertic,Professional Bus Drivers. The way they drive, overtake, stop is horrible. No patience but making other patients. Proper fine / penalty / punishments...should be imposed on those drivers. God Saves All from these traffic offenses.

    Dear Venance and Antony, I do not understand how the RTO and Govt. are mute spectators on this serious issue where many precious lives are lost or maimed for life for no fault of theirs. All are getting their cuts for sure! Now it is only the people movement like Anna's can put an end to these accidents. Starting of train service would be an excellent proposition, but without people taking up the issue as a movement nothing is going to happen!!

    Travelling between Kundapura-Udupi-Mangalore is really a horrible experience. This route has to be Nationalised. Government should take over this route. Another option is Coastal people should put pressure on the government and railways to introduce Local Trains from Kundapura-Udupi-Mangalore. what about other opinion on this idea ?

    I went to Mangalore last month, while coming back i took bus which was going to Mangalore to Kundupur, while getting on to bus, they told me it will be only 3 stop in between till Udupi, we reached Udupi in 1 hour, it was crazy, driver didn’t stop for any one who was coming in front, my heart was in my mouth till I reached Udupi.

    he time limit given by the RTO, and the competition among these buses is a nightmare for every Udupi-Mangalore commuters, till the destination is reached people are not sure whether they will reach safely, prefer to close my eyes when I travel or a heart attack is on the way, wonder why the authorites do take a note of this, may be the greed to issue licences like the advertisment pamplets, hope something is done before more inocent life's are lost and darkness creaps into someone's homes, an easy solution is there, but

    It is very tragic accident. Only yesterday, a Volvo going to Mumbai met with a head on collision with a pvt. intracity bus maiming 35 passengers, some critically! The Mangalore-Udipi stretch is a death trap with the abysmal condition of the roads, widening work going on in the most unscientific manner, old vehicles broken down parked without any warning lights or signals, and over speeding by private buses (Mrutyudhoots). The Govt. must force these pvt. bus operators to take insurance cover to protect the passengers interests in case of death or critical injury. Every overtake on this God forsaken stretch is a near miss of a head-on collision and is a close with death!! I totally agree with Ruchi's anxiety when she travels in these "boxes of death"!!!! God save us passengers who travel in these "mrutyudhoots"!!

    Simply blaming the express bus driver will not do the justice.The drivers are given stop watch and RUN the bus not DRIVE the bus to reach the destination within specified time limit

    I have been watching these express buses driving like Yama Dhootha and killed so many peoples from our twin districts. The drivers get back to their bus next day of accident and drive in same way. There is no fines/black points or blood money applicable to these drivers. Our authorities are just watching these fun and enjoying.

    A very inevitable accident. The minute to minute time-bound express buses between Udupi and Mangalore are literally bulldozing the NH 17 to be in the immediate next return trip oblivious of human traffic on the way. I wonder why the cops are watching this fun!! There has to be some reciprocal arrangement,otherwise such accidents would not have happened. Hope the new Chief Minister saves some lives on NH 17!!!
