Mangalore, Sep 3: Many parts of the state including the coastal region received torrential rain on Friday September 2. Agumbe registered the highest rainfall of 14 cm in the state.
The coast received an average of ten to 13 cm of rain. Many places in Shimoga, Uttara Kannada, Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts came under spells of heavy rain. Normal life of the people was paralyzed because of the increased intensity of rain.
Due of heavy rain in the catchments, Linganamakki Dam is getting filled fast. The water level in the dam is expected to reach its peak within a week, as the present level is short of peak level by only six feet.
Because of cyclonic conditions, fishing boats continued to be anchored at the fishing ports for the fifth successive day. Huge waves caused by strong wind have been stopping the fishermen from undertaking fishing activity. The meteorological department has predicted that rainfall up to 12 cm may be experienced in several regions in the state’s coast during the next one day, and that strong wind with a velocity of 45 to 55 km per hour may blow in these regions.
As flood water, filth and mud got deposited on the railway tracks between Ratnagiri and Nivsar stations on Konkan route in Maharashtra, movement of Matsyagandha Express and Mangalore Express trains between the city and Mumbai were cancelled on Friday. The route of Nizamuddin-Ernakulam South Mangala Express, which started from Nizamuddin on September 1, has been diverted via Panvel, Pune, Miraj, Londa and Madgaon. Trains like Lokamanya Tilak-Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express, Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express, Lokamanya Tilak-Kochuveli Express, Ajmer-Ernakulam Marusagar Express, Hapa-Tiruvenelveli Express are also moving on this changed route. The Lokamanya Tilak-Ernakulam South Duronto Express train starting on Saturday will also move on this diverted route.
Because of haphazard schedules of the trains, there has been heavy rush of passengers for buses moving to Mumbai from the city.
