Mangaluru, Nov 20: In a remarkable testament to medical expertise and collaborative care, Nagappa's (name changed) journey at KMC Hospital Attavar unfolds as a story of resilience and innovation. Referring to a complex condition of laryngotracheal stenosis following a challenging period in the ICU, Nagappa faced a dual challenge – the need for a tracheostomy tube for breathing and a nasogastric tube for feeding.
In an innovative single-stage procedure, a tracheal resection and anastomosis were performed by a skilled surgical team led by ENT surgeons Dr Suja Sreedharan and Dr Manisha Narayan. This approach allowed for the removal of both tubes within a few days. During the surgery, the narrowed segment of the airway was excised, and the two ends were seamlessly re-joined.
The anaesthesia team, under the guidance of Dr Sonal Bhat, played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the procedure. Nagappa's recovery was further supported by a multidisciplinary team, including the pulmonary department led by Dr Vishak Acharya and the physiotherapy department.
Following a three-week recovery period, the trachea was endoscopically examined, confirming successful healing. Nagappa has now regained his voice and is stable. This successful outcome highlights the expertise and collaborative efforts of the medical teams involved in his care at KMC Hospital, Attavar.
