Kundapur, Aug 15: “The nation has emerged as an economic power in the world due to effective decisions of the union government. It’s the farsighted results of former Prime Ministers late Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh,” said Rajya Sabha member and AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes.
He was speaking at the valedictory function of the Congress ‘Walk Towards the Doorsteps of People’ programme held at R S Shetty auditorium here on Sunday August 14.
“The National Employment Guarantee Programme is an innovative project to empower the rural people,” added Fernandes.
Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake alleged that the BJP-led state administration had disregarded the interests of sugarcane growers across the district by making plans to sell the Brahmavar Sugar Factory that has been a hope for local farmers.
Former state minister Jayaprakash Hegde said that the corrupt BJP-led state administration has brought disgrace to Kannadigas. “The recent probe in land scams by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and other MLAs will reveal their role shortly,” said Hegde.
He urged the party activists to reach union government sponsored programmes that are meant for poor people.
District Congress Committee president K Gopal Poojary presided over the programme.
Prakaschandra Shetty, Raje Gowda, Devaki Sannayya, Shyamala Bhandary, Malyady Shivaram Shetty, Kedoor Sadanand Shetty, and Ramakrishna Herale were present on the occasion.
Ganesh Sherigar welcomed the gathering while B Hiriyanna proposed the vote of thanks.
