Mangalore, Aug 12: St Agnes Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research Centre, here celebrated 'Librarian's Day' in commemoration of Padmashri Dr S R Ranganathan's 119th birth anniversary.
The resource person of the day, Dr Gopalkumar, librarian of Goa University, said that librarians play a pivotal role in rendering efficient services to the user community through print and electronic resources.
He added that librarians are catalysts in providing the information to its clients. He demonstrated end note software and its application in preparing bibliographical references for all kinds of reading materials. He highlighted information literacy and how librarians provide information to the user community in a very meticulous way.
Chief librarian Dr S T Sudha expressed in her keynote address that Padmashri Dr S R Ranganathan (1892-1972) was a visionary and an institution in himself who earned accolades around the world for his in depth knowledge and development of library science education in India. She expressed that user in her philosophy is supreme and library and information professionals in the country should take all possible steps, both intellectual and technological, so as to provide services to users efficiently and effectively.
PG co-ordinator Sr Marie Evelyn stated that a library is a learning laboratory which enables the user community to become information literates which in turn helps them in enhancing knowledge.
Principal Dr Sr Prem D’Souza, in her presidential address stressed on how librarians are playing a crucial role in rendering invaluable services to user community. She appealed the gathering to use the library resources for enhancing knowledge through information.
Dr Vishala B K, PG librarian welcomed the gathering. Kavitha, assistant librarian, proposed the vote of thanks while Amrith Kiran compered the programme.
