Karkala, Aug 3: The local policemen, who raided an illegal brewery unit at Banglegudde here, where illicit liquor was reportedly being prepared, arrested eight persons including three women, recently.
Four of the arrested were reportedly preparing country liquor while the other four were gambling. The arrested have been identified as Ignatius (52), Celine D’Souza (40), Carmine Lobo (80), and Diana (14), who are members of the same family. Mohammed (40), Shariff (35), Abdul (40), and Sadashiva (39), who were allegedly playing cards for stakes, were also taken into custody. About 15 litres of illicit liquor, three pitchers full of fermented matter, three swords, cudgels, and Rs 1,040 found in the possession of the gamblers, were seized from the spot.
It is learnt that the women members of the household brandished swords at the raiding party on Sunday night through the windows. Under the direction of deputy superintendent of police, Santosh Kumar, the policemen entered the building by forcing open the back door, and arrested the culprits. Police personnel, Surendra, Mahesh, Prabhamani and Manju, suffered minor nicks and cuts caused by the swords during the raid.
Circle inspector of police, Vijay Prasad, sub-inspectors, Pramod Kumar and Azmat Ali, apart from 20 other police personnel took part in the raid.
