Udupi, Jul 11: Fifty-year-old Gideon Barnes, principal-designate of Kemmannu Government Pre-University College died in a road mishap that occured on the national highway at Uppoor here on Monday July 11.
Gideon was riding his motorcycle to College from his residence at Brahmavar when a Mitsubishi Eicher truck that was plying from Goa to Kerala hit his motorcycle, killing him on the spot. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
Gideon had served as lecturer at Hebri Government Pre-University College for nine years and was popular in the neighbourhood. He was then transferred to Kemmannu Government Pre-University College where he has been serving as the principal-designate for the last three years. He had also served as part-time lecturer at colleges in Koteshwar, Tekkatte and Shankaranarayan. He was a mild-natured, efficient, honest and a popular principal with the students.
Gideon was supposed to go to Bangalore on valuation duty on Monday night. He was on his way to College in order to finish some urgent tasks, when the tragedy occurred.
Gideon was among the four sons and two daughters of T A Barnes and the late Evelyn Barnes, residents of Brahmavar. His daughter is studying in Class VII, while his wife is serving as part-time lecturer in Kota Vivek Pre-University College.
The College authorities announced holiday on Monday to condole his demise. He was an active member of the district Pre-University College English Lecturers’ Forum. Ram Bhat, the president of the Forum and his colleagues also expressed their condolences.
Brahmavar police have registered a case in this regard.
