Mangalore, Jun 25: As part of the extension activity of the department of commerce, St Agnes College, on the theme "Community Awareness Campaign on Solid Waste Management," the students of "Team Agnes on CAC" had an interaction with the citizen-friendly Mangalore city corporation commissioner Dr K N Vijay Prakash, Thursday June 23 at Corporation office.
About 20 students along with staff coordinator Dr Devi Prabha, HOD Sr M Supriya, and staff members Fiona Tauro and Lavita Rodrigues were the part of this fruitful interaction.
The interaction with the MCC commissioner was arranged in order to orient the youth on the several initiatives undertaken by the state government and the city corporation on the management of solid waste in and around the city. The input provided by the commissioner with evidences was very informative and was able to sensitize the students on their role and responsibilities on solid waste management.
Giving the geographical topography of Mangalore, the commissioner briefed the students about the 60 wards of the city and the progressive work undertaken on those wards. Answering the various questions posed by the students the commissioner added that one needs to remember that "we sacrifice our today for others’ tomorrow" whenever one experiences some inconveniences when a developmental work is under process.
Door to door collection of waste with segregation at the starting point, beach cleaning, dustbin free city, special park exclusively for the handicapped people and women, centralized mechanism for the operation of street light, uninterrupted supply of water to the city, provision of clean, green and safe environment for the people were his major dreams and though he not is completely satisfied with the progress of the work done, he expressed that most of these projects were undertaken for the first time in Mangalore and the many awards received by the corporation were proofs for the same.
