Udupi, Feb 28: Manipal Academy of HigherEeducation (MAHE) marked the National science day on February 28 by encouraging the young minds to take up scientific temper. Various activity based learning completions related to science were held on the occasion for the students and prizes were distributed for the winners.
A formal National Science Day celebration was also held. Professor P Subramanya Yadapadithaya, vice chancellor Mangalore university was the chief guest for the programme. Lt Gen Dr MD Venkatesh, vice chancellor, MAHE, Manipal presided over the programme.
In his address to the students, professor P Subramanya Yadapadithaya said, “Science and technology will strengthen our hands to make things happen and also to make meaningful differences in the lives of others. We should understand and appreciate the contribution of science and scientists. On this day Sir CV Raman discovered Raman’s effect, for which he was awarded the Nobel prize. Raman’s effect is relevant even today. It has a lasting effect on mankind. National science day 2023 is observed with a theme “global science for global wellbeing”. Indian philosophy, ethos and values contribute to ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam’, so is the case with the Indian knowledge system which aims at ‘think globally and act locally’. Emerging global role is felt in India today more than ever before. The punch line of NEP 2020 is ’nation first and character must’. To unleash the potential of every individual should be the top most priority of every education system. Science and technology have been transforming human lives. We have to create a meaningful impact in the hearts and minds of young students, they are the hope of transforming India. Questioning unquestionable things and looking beyond the boundaries. MAHE teachers work like a team, they generate internal outcomes the end results of their existence is being felt by each and every stakeholder. There exists a collective, scientific responsibility and leveraging the power of science for human progress. Today’s science is tomorrow’s technology. There are several ethical questions concerning artificial intelligence also,” he said.
In his presidential address, Lt Gen Dr MD Venkatesh, vice chancellor MAHE said, “This day should not just be a celebration, the participants of this program should develop a scientific temper as well. Its about believing in your ideas. Dreams can create scientific innovations. Knowledge, skills, and ethical thinking are the three domains of science. Education is not just about reading and answering questions. Hundreds of scientists may emerge from amongst you people. Our nation is in a developmental stage. Major developments are taking place every 10 years nowadays. Science and technology is moving so fast it is for us to make the best use of it. Science if it remains in the laboratory it is not good for anybody, it should become useful for the society”.
Science models, drawing and science seminar competitions were held for the students of various institutions managed by the Academy of general education.
Dr Narayan Sabhahit, pro vice chancellor – technology and science MAHE Manipal welcomed the gathering. Dr P Giridhar Kini, registrar proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Sathish Rao B S, director MSLS Manipal was present on the occasion.
