Mangaluru, Feb 22: A day-long lead lecture series on Emerging Communicable Diseases was organized by the departments of botany, zoology and microbiology at St Agnes College, Autonomous, on February 21 for the biological science students.

The chief guest of the inaugural programme Dr Dorothy Rego, policy and research advisor, Peel Public Health, Ontario, Canada, the principal Sr Dr Venissa A C, the dean of science Helen Serrao, and convenor of the programme Vidya Patali were present on the dais. Vidya Patali introduced the chief guest and welcomed the gathering. Dr Dorothy Rego, inaugurated the lead lecture series by lighting of the lamp. Dr Dorothy Rego was felicitated for her notable contribution in the field of public health.

First lecture was given by Dr Dorothy Rego on the topic ‘Emerging and remerging communicable diseases: Career opportunities in the field of public health’. Dr Rego enlightened the students on the various communicable diseases, its outbreak, prevention and vaccination. She also added a note on the career opportunities in the field of public health.

The second lecture was delivered by Dr Shrinidhi Shetty, department of community medicine, AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research centre, Mangaluru on the topic ‘Emerging and re emerging diseases: Indian and Global Scenario’ . Dr Shrinidhi spoke on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment aspects of the various communicable diseases.

The third lecture was given by Dr Deekshit, associate professor, division of infectious diseases, Nitte University, Deralakatte, Mangaluru on the topic ‘Antimicrobial resistance: A pandemic of concern’. Dr Deekshit dealt on the antimicrobial resistance shown by the various pathogens over the years which made the illness severe and high risk of spread of the disease.

Sr Clara AC, the vice principal was the chief guest for the valedictory programme. Participants shared their feedback on the lead lecture series. Sr Clara congratulated the members of the faculty of botany, zoology and microbiology for the successful organization of the programme and the students for their enthusiastic participation. A total of 187 students and the members of the faculty attended the programme. The sessions were very informative and of enriching experience for the students of the biological sciences.
