Mangalore: Van Engine Catches Fire – Three Students Injured

Mangalore, June 9: After a Maruti Omni van carrying school children caught fire on the evening of Wednesday June 8 at Kodical in the city, three girl students suffered burn injuries. They have been identified as Shawn Aiman (10), Prabina (10), and Timi T’Souza (10), all sixth standard students of Lady Hill Victoria School.

At the time the accident occurred, the van had nine students. As the LPG in the van was exhausted when the vehicle was passing through a road near Lord Ganapati Temple in Kodical, the driver reportedly was trying to run the engine on petrol, when a fire was ignited. By the time the children, sensing that the engine had caught fire, hurriedly opened the doors and came out of the van, three of them got burn injuries.

Aiman and Prabina were injured to their legs and abdomen region. They are being treated in A J Hospital here. Timi, who suffered burn injuries to legs and other body parts, is being treated at Fr Muller Medical Hospital in Kankanady. Urwa police have registered a case.
