Bangalore, June 8: Reversing the earlier decision of banning women to serve liquor and food in Bars and Restaurants in the city, Karnataka’s Excise Minister M P Renukacharya has now declared that Bar Maids will be allowed to work with immediate effect.
After a meeting with owners of 48 bars and restaurants in the City on Wednesday, the Minister announced the decision to allow bar owners to employ girls for serving liquor and food in bars and restaurants.
“Owners can employ girls for serving food and liquor in their bars and restaurant from today itself,” he said.
The State Excise Department had taken the decision based on the ruling of the Supreme Court in 2007 and Karnataka High in 2008, the Minister explained.
All bars and restaurants have to run as per the rules of the Department, he said pointing out that stringent action would be taken against owners if women were found in obscene dresses. The Department has no powers to impose dress code for women, he clarified.
Renukacharya said that Department has not given permission for live band, dance or any other programmes to be held in bars and restaurants.
City Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji had recently banned women serving liquor in the bars and restaurants in the city.
The police contention was that the girls employed to serve liquor were reportedly dancing to attract customers and also indulging in activities causing harm to society. The police have already started checking bars and restaurants and served the order copies to bar owners.
