Panaji, Jun 2: Congress Legislative Party in Goa today demanded inquiry by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the killing of two tribal youths during Balli violence reported on May 25.

The legislature party, whose government is under immense criticism for mishandling the agitation, felt that state Crime Branch would not be able to give justice to the investigation of this highly sensitive case.

CLP spokesman Mauvin Godinho told reporters on Wednesday that handing over the investigation to Crime Branch was not a wise move by the government.

Godinho said that the CLP has requested the state government to let CBI inquire into the entire episode involving tribal agitation and killing of two youths. “We are of the opinion that the local police would not be able to do justice to the investigation and it is a very serious issue,” he said.

The spokesman said that `police intelligence on May 25 should have been better, that could have helped to avoid such a ghastly incident.’

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat  has been drawing flak for mishandling the situation. United Tribals Associations Alliance (UTAA), which was spearheading the agitation, had demanded Judicial inquiry into the incident.

After initial reluctance, the state government has ordered Judicial probe although it is yet to name the judge, who would head it. The government has also suspended South District Collector G P Naik, who had order cane charge on the tribals.
