Panaji, May 31: Entering the fifth day post-violence, the tribal leaders today softened their stand and agreed to take over bodies of their two young leaders who were burnt to death in a violence at Balli village, 60 kms South of Panaji.

United Tribals Associations Alliance (UTAA) President Prakash Velip told reporters that they will conduct the funeral on these bodies on Monday itself.  The postmortem on both the bodies was conducted today at Goa Medical College and hospital.

Earlier, the tribal leaders had refused to take over the bodies demanding arrest of the killers. Manguesh Gaonkar and Dilip Velip, both the tribal leaders, were burnt to death by unruly mob at Balli on May 25.

Both were the part of 8,000-odd tribals who were agitating on the streets pressing for their various demands including implementation of reservation of seats in the government jobs.

Manguesh and Dilip were burnt in the Cashew Factory located at Balli village. Four others were rescued by the Fire and Emergency Services from the same building.

Around hundreds of tribals, who had gathered at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Monday, demanded suspension of Superintendent of Police Atmaram Deshpande, who had claimed that tribals were drunk on the agitation day.

Deshpande during the official press conference had said that `many of the people in the crowd were drunk while some were about to get drunk.’

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the tribal leaders expressed their anguish on Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for not fulfilling the promises, he made on Saturday.

Velip said that Kamat had assured to suspend South Goa District Magistrate Gokuldas Naik, he had also assured to arrest the killers and also initiate judicial inquiry. “But nothing has happened. Police inquiry is going at such a slow pace that they have not arrested anyone,” he said.

UTAA has decided to decide their future course of action only after conducting funeral on both the bodies.
