Udupi, May 27: A sugar factory employee committed suicide in his quarters at Brahmavar, near here, on Wednesday May 25 night.

The deceased has been identified as Dinesh Shetty. He was employed in Brahmavar sugar factory that was shut down six years ago.

Shetty committed suicide over financial distress caused by failure of factory authorities to pay the service money that has been delayed for all employees pending decision. He borrowed money from many people to tide over the situation.

According to reliable sources, Shetty committed suicide by hanging from the roof in his quarters when the pressure from lenders got unbearable.

He was surviving by doing odd jobs and was supporting his two blind children.

Factory employees joined by the locals staged a protest by laying his dead body in front of the factory building located on NH 17 on Thursday May 26, pressing the authorities to pay their unpaid dues at the earliest.
