Udupi, May 24: “Gandhiji could get hundreds of people in support of his call for any action within minutes. Compared to that time, we have the support of modern gadgets and the media. Still, why programmes being organized by Congress party do not attract sizeable number of people?” wondered Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes. He was addressing the Congress activists and office bearers at a programme organized at the district Congress Bhavan here on Monday May 23.
He urged the Congressmen to properly assimilate the rich history of Congress, which had played a major role in the freedom struggle of the country. He told them to lead a life of sacrifice, true concern, and work to serve the people at large. “You should work to strengthen the party at rural level and towards the establishment of a strong network at block and booth levels. Office bearers should understand and discharge their responsibilities effectively. Activists should enthusiastically back every programme, agitation and action the party launches,” he advised.
He told the youth that people will be by their side, if they render genuine sacrifice and service to people. “Lend an ear to the sufferings of the poor. Check whether facilities extended by the government reach the poor in the society. Instead of working for elections alone, we should serve the people by deeming it as our bounden duty,” he said.
Former minister, Vasant V Salian, K Jayaprakash Hegde, P V Mohan, Janardan Tonse, Pramod Madhwaraj and M A Gafoor were present at the programme.
