Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 24: State minister for muzrai and higher education, Dr V S Acharya, claimed that the grants being released towards temple development in the state had seen a 20-fold increase after Yeddyurappa took over reins. He was speaking after participating as the chief guest of a religious function organized in connection with the inauguration of development programmes and Brahmakalashotsava of Goddess Kalikamba Temple in Kaup on Monday May 23.

“The government has been sanctioning grants, giving due weightage to the guidance and social services with which these temples are associated with. The earlier governments released grants amounting to four to five crore rupees every year towards temple development,” he stated.

He said that the temples which are controlled by his department have been contributing around Rs 3,000 crore to the exchequer annually, and that the BJP government in the state was the first to plough back the funds pooled through the temples back for their development.

Acharya said that in the past, the government used to sanction only Rs 500 per month as maintenance allowance to small temples. “Our government increased it to Rs 6,000 per annum. Shortly, we plan to hike this to Rs 12,000 per year,” he said, adding that the government plans to make some amendments to Endowment Act shortly. Acharya further informed that the state government has decided to declare Vishwakarma Jayanti as restricted holiday from this year onwards, as per the demand made by people from Vishwakarma community. He said that in course of time, the state will toe the line of some other state governments in declaring holiday on Vishwakarma Jayanti.

All incomes of temples under the Murzai goes to the government. Other than Hindu temples, other religious places do not come under the govt and all incomes derived there are not given to Govt.

    Avinash,

What you will do out of a beautiful temple/church/mosque when people are starving ? Why people give so much to temples thinking that it will make Gods happy ? Is it not time for us to come out of this belief ? When you are aware that what we gave to religious institutions is misused, why are we continuing such mistakes ? Please check on your claim that 50 crores is d for Christians - is it given ?

Even Churches have to give tax on their income. I wish to know if temples give tax or the government take total earnings each day. Please enlighten me.

Big shots who donates money/jewelry articles worth crores to temples should rather dedicate the money to uplift the BPL citizens.

    Mr.Lydia Loba,
You have no right to comment on grant on funds to temples as this done out out of the money collected from the temple Hundis! This is the money Hindu devotees contribute to the god which the Murazu minsitry of the goverment takes away. Hundreds of crores are collected every year from temples and hardly15-20% is given back to temples.
As Churche funds anyway arent controlled by the goverment they have no right to critsize.
Even so Ktaka govt has decalred 50crores for Christians - overall 185 crores for Christians and Hindus!

What does this man imply ? Is he boasting to have granted such a huge money out of tax collected or is he criticizing the government (no way) for this move ?

What would we achieve by funding for places of worship ? We have no sufficient water /electricity/ education/ medical facilities - how will the temples help Karnataka's development ? The promised another Gujarat.. yeah ??
