Mangalore, May 24: Following the cancellation of a meeting between Mangalore city corporation and trade union leaders, street vendors under the banner of CITU protested in front of the MCC here on Monday May 23.
The protesters picketed MCC commissioner K N Vijayprakash's office demanding a new date to hold a meeting with the union leaders.
Members of street vendors' union affiliated to CITU shouted slogans against the commissioner. Sunil Kumar Bajal, honorary president of the union said that their protest aims to safeguard the lives of street vendors. The protesters also urged the commissioner to stop the functioning of ‘red van’ with immediate effect. They said their voice is going unheard as MCC's tiger operation has been evacuating their shops mercilessly while their investments to keep their small shops are going waste.
Sources said that a meeting has been fixed for Thursday May 26 at 3.30 pm.
