Daijiworld Media Network – Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, May 21: The call given by the Joint Action Committee of Motor Vehicle Employees Associations to the vehicle owners not to operate their vehicles on Friday May 20, in protest against the hike in the prices of petroleum products, received immense response in the district. None of the vehicles including government and private buses, auto rickshaws, taxies and private vehicles took to roads on Friday. Various labour organizations like INTUC, CITU, BMS, STU, and AITUC had supported the strike call.

Movement of people in the town remained very thin. Shops and other establishments were closed. Bus stand and other public places did not see any activity. In the absence of other vehicles, people who were compelled to travel had to depend on trains. Hence, movement of people in the railway station was considerably more.

People from other places, who arrived in the district without prior knowledge of the strike call, faced lot of problems. The protestors also took out a procession in the town, expressing their dissent at the price rise, and raising slogans to lower the prices of petroleum products.
