Shimoga, May 20: In an incident that occurred at the district jail premises here on Thursday May 19 evening, Jayanna (25), an undertrial here, committed suicide by hanging himself.

Jayanna, who was walking around and ventured near the godown of the jail, reportedly committed suicide there. The other jail inmates, immediately after noticing this, informed the officials. Although steps were taken to shift Jayanna to the district McGann Hospital immediately, it is said that he breathed his last on the way.

Jayanna, a resident of Vidyanagar here, was facing nine cases including robbery.

There are claims that the jail officials tried to keep the incident a secret. Even after the body was shifted to the mortuary from the district McGann Hospital, no one was present to brief the newsmen who rushed to the spot to collect information. When contacted, jail superintendent, Sheshamurty, confirmed that the undertrial had indeed committed suicide.
