Kundapur: Uprooted Banyan Tree Injures People, Damages Vehicles

Kundapur, May 18: Four persons were injured, and vehicles were damaged, after a huge banyan tree standing in front of Mahaganapati Mangalya Mandir in Navunda in the taluk fell across the highway allof a sudden on Tuesday May 17. As a result, four persons were injured, and vehicles were damaged. Traffic on the national highway too came to a standstill for some time.

The tree fell on a vehicle loaded with Hero Honda motor bikes meant for delivery at Byndoor, and a government bus going to Udupi from Hubli. Driver of the vehicle carrying motor bikes, named Sudesh, a resident of Bidkalkatte near here, suffered serious injuries. Rajashekhar Indi, conductor of the government bus, and a passenger named Vishwanath from Karwar, were also injured. They were given first aid.

As there was no wind movement at the time of the accident, it is felt that the tree snapped as its trunk had become hollow at the bottom. As the tree feel, some electric poles were uprooted, and power supply in the region got disrupted.

Byndoor station house officer, Pavitra Teja, rushed to the spot and cleared the road for traffic. The injured driver is being treated in a hospital. A case was registered in Byndoor police station.
