Mangalore, May 17: Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee has supported the action of the state governor, H R Bhardwaj, in recommending for the imposition of Presodent’s rule in the state.
“The minority BJP government supported by the assembly speaker was ruling the state till now. The verdict of the Supreme Court has made this clear. The Governor is right in recommending presidential rule in the state, taking into account wholesale horse trading, continuance in power by employing dubious methods, loot of the state’s wealth, and the general opinion that has emerged out of the Supreme Court verdict. The President should approve the recommendation and impose president’s rule in the state,” district Congress president, B Ramanath Rai, urged at a press conference held here on Monday May 16.
MLA, U T Khader, opined that the decision of the BJP to protest against the decision taken by the Governor, who as a constitutional head has taken the right decision, is meaningless.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee secretary, Ivan D’Souza, district Congress vice president, Ibrahim Kodijal, former mayors, Shshidhar Hegde and Ashraf, and several other party functionaries were present.
In a statement issued from Puttur, MP and state BJP vice president, Nalin Kumar Kateel, termed the efforts of the state Governor to unseat a democratically elected government as unconstitutional. He alleged that the Governor has been acting as an agent of Congress, although he is duty-bound to uphold the dignity of the position he occupies. He also charged the Governor of being hand in glove with the JDS and Congress in their efforts to dismiss the BJP government. He said that the Governor can conduct trail of strength of the government on the floor of the state assembly alone, and not in ways he chooses on his own. He warned that the people of the state will not pardon the Governor and the opposition, if such a step is taken unilaterally.
