Mangaluru, Nov 19: A math workshop titled ‘Simplifying the Unknown: Mathematics education in the information age’ hosted by Manipal School was held at the Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Attavar on Saturday, November 5.

The resource person for this workshop was Shuborno Chakroborty, a mathematics faculty and creativity expert who has worked with various schools in Delhi and Haryana. He also creates and vets the content for various textbook publishers.

The workshop started with the prayer by the school choir followed by welcome address by principal Anuradha Shivaram. MC for the day was Tr. Ashwini. Sixty-five Math teachers from various schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi participated in this workshop which provided them with strategies to make Math teaching learning an engaging experience.

At this workshop, Shuborno shed light and elaborated on the following areas:

• Real life applications of Algebraic expressions and Pythagoras concepts in Middle and High school
• Experiential learning on Trigonometry ratios and specific angles
• Importance of Vedic Math in improving mental calculations and problem-solving skills
• Integration of Math with other subjects

The facilitator had a brilliant technical and pedagogical knowledge which made the workshop more informative, constructive and interactive. The workshop turned out to be beneficial in strengthening the fundamental conceptual skills in methodologies of teaching Math and proved to be highly fruitful for the Math teachers.

The major takeaways of the session are as follows:

• Short and precise techniques for solving sums using Vedic Math
• Teachers to provoke the concept through the process by different techniques rather than the mechanical teaching
• Techniques for ensuring that everyone is thinking of the answers to those questions (keep surprise)
• Highlighting the need to empower the learners with technological tools that makes learning not only interesting but easier
• Teachers to integrate Math with other subjects

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Saritha, submission of feedback forms and distribution of certificates. All the participants were happy that the training programme had given them an opportunity to learn new teaching learning strategies which they can incorporate into their classrooms and cascade to their teams back in school.
