Udupi, May 14: The local police have solved a mysterious case of theft that occurred in Korangrapady near here on the night of Wednesday May 11. In the case, family members of Sarvottam Tantri had realized after getting up on Thursday morning that gold ornaments and cash kept in an almirah at home had gone missing, and someone had used keys kept on the television stand for the theft. There were no traces of anyone having entered the house forcefully, as the bolt of the door was intact.

The policemen now claim that Anantaram Tantri, son of Sarovottam Tantri, living near Vishnumurty Temple in Korangrapady, had committed this theft. Reportedly, Anantaram, an engineering student in Bangalore, confessed to the policemen that he resorted to this heinous act, as he had lost heavily in cricket betting.

After going through the details of the case and circumstantial evidences, the policemen came to a conclusion that family members were involved with this theft. During the individual questioning by the police, Anantaram confessed about his crime. He said he had also stolen ornaments and silver valuables from the cupboard of his mother in December last. He reportedly stole more ornaments and valuables along with cash on May 7 and 11 from his father’s almirah. The total value of the ornaments and valuables is over five lac rupees.

It is gathered that the boy handed over some of the ornaments to his friends in Bangalore, which are yet to be recovered. The policemen led by district superintendent of police, Dr Ravikumar, deputy superintendent of police, Jayant Shetty, and policemen of town police station here, had conducted the investigation. Gold and silver items pledged to a finance company in Malpe by the student have been recovered by the police team.
