Mangaluru, Nov 13: Deputy commissioner (DC) Ravikumar M R said in a press conference that a meeting of seven-member committee is slated on November 14 to discuss the shortage of sand in Dakshina Kannada district.
Ravikumar further said, “I am getting to know about the sand issue. One meeting is held in Bengaluru in this regard of the session’s committee. Both legal and illegal sand mining and transportation are discussed. If legal sand mining will be done properly, illegal excavation will stop. That is why the meeting is held on November 14.
“In the district of Udupi, National Green Tribunal, Chennai had banned sand excavation in CRZ limits. The same was implemented by the district administration of Dakshina Kannada also. This was questioned by the sand mining contractors at the high court. The high court quashed the decision of the district administration. We do not have the intention of going for higher appeal. We will discuss excavating sand in the traditional way in the district,” he said.
