Udupi: Fishing Boat from Malpe Sinks – Loss Rs 35 lac

Udupi, May 6: A deep sea fishing boat that had set sail from Malpe port sank near Tadadi in Uttara Kannada district on Thursday May 5 morning.

The ill-fated boat, named ‘Shivakripa’ and owned by Jayanti Kotian Malpe, had left Malpe port on the night of Monday May 2. On Thursday morning, when the boat was engaged in fishing activity, the wood planks at the bottom snapped, and water started gushing inside the boat. All the six fishermen from Bhatkal, who were in the boat, were rescued by the personnel of another fishing boat operating nearby. The rescued fishermen reached Karwar port thereafter.

The loss in this tragedy is estimated at Rs 35 lac. This is inclusive of the cost of the boat, diesel, fish stock and ice on board the said boat.
