Udupi, Apr 26: Many development works will be undertaken for the island residents who are living under challenging circumstances for many years, said state higher education and Udupi district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya.
Dr Acharya was speaking after laying the foundation stone for building a bridge connecting Bavalikudru, located near Nilavar at the purview of Kunjalu gram panchayat, near here, recently.
Better roads and linking bridge is the chief development works that would integrate other essential necessities, added minister Dr Acharya.
MLA K Raghupati Bhat said that the linking bridge has been a long-pending demand of island residents at Bavalikudru. The works will begin at the earliest, in order to complete the same before the monsoon this year, said MLA Raghupati Bhat.
TP member Umesh Naik, Kunjal gram panchayat president Raghuram Shetty, vice president Raju Kulal, member Baptist D’Souza, Nilavar Mahishamardini temple managing trustee B Suprasad Shetty, Bharat scouts and guides commandant Shanta V Acharya, CEO D V Hegde, Raghupati Brahmavar and others were preent on the occasion.

Brief Information on Bridge Works
The works will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 33 lac, by pooling together Rs 15 lac from local area development project of Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes, Rs 5 lac each from the local area development project of minister Dr Acharya and MLA Raghupati Bhat, Rs 8 lac state funds under natural calamities funds and remaining from local panchayat.
The linking bridge will 45 meters in length and 3 meters wide, open for heavy vehicular traffic. It will give connectivity to Bavalikudru, a landmass of 100 acres. If it becomes reality, the students and women, sick and ailing who had to bear the wrath during monsoon season can benefit besides the natives who were braving the life on ferrying the people across the mainland.
