Dark Shades of Anna's Crusade?

 September 12, 2012

A day after Team Anna announced its political debut, some dejected supporters of Anna Hazare across the country burnt posters of Anna and India against Corruption. The supporters are against the team's decision to form a political party. The supporters had been sitting with Anna in protest for the past 10 days. Has Anna’s crusade against the corruption reached an abrupt dead end?

Anna and his team knew for sure that they would not get the Congress lead UPA government to budge their demand for the strong Lokpal bill. According to Ajaz Asharf, “Not even the incorrigible optimist believed the indefinite fast of team Anna at Jantar Mantar could compel the UPA government to institute probe into charge leveled against 14 union ministers and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.”

Did Anna and his team have another alternative other than the political alternative? Why did Anna choose political sword? Why did he choose to turn away from genuine revolution to political game? Will he be able to deliver what the nation hoped for- ‘a corruption free nation’ through the political path? Why did he decide to give up his Gandhian way?

Where did Anna lose the track?

A year ago Anna became the conscience and voice of nation against the corruption. The whole nation rallied behind him and placed their hopes on him. He galvanized the whole nation specially the middle class to support his movement through the help of unprecedented media coverage and publicity. But the glory was short lived. The mass began to grow disillusioned about the very movement.

According to me there are two major causes for the down fall of Anna movement.

1. Anna’s excessive resort to hunger strike

Anna Hazare has sat on several indefinite and short fasts for different causes over the years. But, it was the effort at Jantar Mantar in April last year that the spotlight first returned on hunger strike as a bargaining tool in the political arena. No wonder being Gandhian, Anna drew his inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi to fast. It proved at first as an effective instrument to bring moral pressure on the corrupt politicians. But excessive resort to hunger strike has ended up making the whole tactic seem as a tool of blackmail rather than moral pressure. But, over a short period of 16 months, 'fasting' seems to have lost its advantage. Anna was at it again a couple of times but finally seems to have abandoned the tool last week. Fasting for a cause may forever lose its charm now. After a year the fast tactic failed to attract the people to come out in support. People have slowly lost their enthusiasm.

2. Failure to bear the frustration

It was Yogendra Yadav, senior fellow at CSDS, who gave the Clarion call to provide the political alternative when he said, “I would tell him to say to the country that it needs an alternative kind of politics. And to say while I will not join a political party, I am here to help you form one by laying foundations of a new kind of a political organization,” to Karan Thapar on CNN.

There was reason for team Anna embracing the suggestion at that time. He had failed to put pressure on the government through his hunger strike. There were sign of bickering light within his core group. The whole movement was losing its ground when he started his indefinite hunger strike this July at Jantar Mantar. Anna was definitely going through low phase of his revolutionary movement.

It is very unfortunate that the first sign of frustration came with Anna and his team opting to contest election by going political. Team Anna has unwisely decided to enter into politics. It can prove to be a dangerous territory. Does team Anna have money and muscle power to fight the elections? Anna should know that even now elections are fought on basis of caste and class. Can team Anna penetrate the barrier of caste and win elections? What if Anna’s team contests elections and does not win? What happens to the whole movement of Indian against corruption?

The alternative other than the political alternative

Anna being an experienced social activist must know the corruption is malaise that cannot be cured overnight. It certainly cannot be rooted out from the top. Corruption is the diseases that need to be addressed from the bottom, grass root level.

I strongly feel Anna should have not tried to change political system and politicians at once. There is a saying in English which goes one cannot teach old dog new trick. Politician being the field will resist any change and are unwilling to mend their ways. The alternative for building the nation is building up the next generation. We have the future of the country being molded in the schools and colleges.

True nation building?

I am very inspired by the incident narrated by Biswath Gosh in one of his opinion piece about his experience in a train Journey which clearly drives home what I want to say.

“I am reminded of a train journey I undertook from Chennai to Hyderabad some years ago. My co-passengers in the coupe were a small family — a man, woman and their child. Soon after they finished having dinner, the man was about to throw the plastic boxes out of the window when the child — a girl about five years old — stopped him.

“No appa,” she admonished her father, “My teacher tells me not to throw out things like that. Please put them in the bin.” The man deeply embarrassed but bearing a proud smile, set out in search of a bin”.

That’s where nation-building begins: the school. One cannot set right the character of a nation through legislation, laws and regulations. What can a law do for us? A piece law can only punish the guilty — if at all one is found guilty. Many a time guilty go unrecognized. But if you are really striving for a corruption-free society, you’ll have to begin at the grassroots level. A place where there are no television cameras. That is where the reality of India lies.

Maybe education against corruption at the grassroot level will work for sometime but the UPA will be shrewd enough to realise that and thus stop it.

There are other things that went against Anna.
    1. Congress succeeded in reducing the media coverage on Anna, which was vital for them. (remember raids on Times Now?)
    2. Congress succeeded in painting Anna as pro-BJP/ pro-RSS. If you are againist congress then you are pro-BJP.
    3. Anna never spoke like a politician, He just said what was in his mind. You can appreciate Narendra Modi in private, but never do it public. All so called secularists were against Anna in one go, Congress used it very well.

Forming a political party is in my opinion is a right decision. In a hung parliament, even if you can manage to win 10-20 seats you can drive the agenda. Like Mulayam does it for his personal benefits (CBI raids). Why can't Anna's team do it for the betterment of the country?

I fully agree with the article. It should start from grass root level. Here I have seen who have attended the IAC meetings, itself when come to road alone try to violate the rules. It appears to be simple that abiding by the rules of road, why? first we take the pledge that from today I will abide the rules of the road. I will drive the vehicle or ride by two wheeler as required by the law. I will not violate the signal. First we make our road corrupt free, the first person of traffic constable will get afraid of the people from stopping the vehicles unnecessarily. Will keep the road from road blockers (by putting a stage restraining the usage of the road). Like this in simple things first make our people corrupt free. Don't try to break the queue surely the officials will change automatically. I have seen many youngsters who visited the foreign countries and abide the rules of that country on coming back the violators. This campaign should start from school to college. Automatically the corruption will come down.

As a foreigner who is in love with India I remember the time one year ago when Anna Hazare started his campaign against corruption in India.
Up to now I have never lost the impression that Anna Hazare is a true Gandhian, a man who got support from people from all walks of life in India.
He used a very useful weapon to put pressure on the Government of India and political parties, he started to fast, an indefinite fast.

The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, showed the world, that is was possible by peaceful actions and fasting to get independence from the British Raj.
Mahatma Gandhi is in the heart of all Indians and therefore Anna Hazare got this tremendous support.
Across India countless Indians attended peaceful protests to get rid of corruption and the Indians dreamt of an India without corruption.
A shining India with opportunities for all, a working infrastructure, literacy, medical healthcare, pensions for the elderly, gender balance.
The downtrodden and the poorest of the poor had reason to dream of a better life, a better future for their children.

Even for me as a foreigner to imagine an India without corruption, a dream would come true. India is the biggest democracy on earth with a secular constitution, independent media (not always) an independent judiciary.

Is the dream of an independent India over? In fact the movement against corruption lost its momentum.

The excellent article written by Bala Kiran describes the two major causes for the down fall of Anna movement.

    1. Anna´s excessive resort to hunger strike
    2. Failure to bear the frustration.

What will happen with the movement of Anna Hazare or where will it end that is not decisive. Most important is that the dream of an India without corruption is alive in the hearts of ordinary Indians.
India´s society will not give up a wonderful dream to work for an India with opportunities for all.

    Best regards

What is wrong if Anna wants to form a political party? We have many good leaders in all the political parties who can lead our country. All like minded people can join together and form a better corruption free party to lead India for a better tomorrow.

every citizen is well aware of his rights but find himself satisfied just by accusing leaders, govt. and the system as well as bureaucrats before his friends. if any one really protest then the same people come forward to criticise the protesters finding flaws in his ways of protest. Let's come forward and do something creative against the evils. Has anyone has the guts to criticise tata group which alone has grabbed 15% of total extractable coal reserves in mixed mines category? tata group has grabbed huge land with the help of govt.in the name of industrial activity, say, thousands acre (3400acre confirmed by govt)in orissa for steel plant, 600acre (out of 850acre)in bengal, thousands acre in assam for tea gardens, thousands acres for jamshedpur steel plant."when land was aquired our people were cruelly removed and dumped in open plots with polythene sheets",told Ravi Jharika, secretary of Visthapan virodhi jan manch, orissa while resisting against forceful aquisition. let's focus on supporting everyone who is against corruption and should not be felt cheated as every one has his own ways to fight/to resist. But be focussed, come forward to help people fighting corruption.

I agree with you that the crusade has to begin in grass root level. We need to bring awareness among the people the need to fight against corruption,And let this awareness begin in me. If small like minded people join hands and tell the world that Another World is a possibility than we can set the crusade in motion.Lets start in our village, and take a oath that I will not give bribe and I will also not take bribe.Let this be our first step. And see the result. This has to come from with in not by legislation.

    1. Its right that schools are national builders, but the affairs of education are badly tampered by politics today & no hope on these lines.
    2. People at large are not able to believe in today's parties, some votes one of them and the other decide not to cast vote, which does not help democracy.
    3. IAC EK VIKALP dene ke liye majboor hui hai, let them give, the voter needing alternative will not seek from them MONEY/MUSCLE POWER which has become necessity of today's politics.
    4. It is not that people are not supportive to IAC, but they are not available for now & then street show.
    5. If IAC provides alternative, they may loose, but they will not be blamed by the people, rather people will search their soul for not voting for them in the future to come.
    6. In case, no alternate politics is initiated, the things will not improve at its own, rather they will turn worst. So, initiative, though very difficult, should be welcomed.
    7. This may prove to turn India & Indians into HONEST state.
    8. Good luck, if alternative is provided.
