The Other Angle to Air Crash Tragedy...

May 27, 2010

There has been a lot of debate going on worldwide ever since the air crash tragedy in Mangalore and no meeting concludes without discussing this topic.  We have been reading a lot of opinions about the crash in the print media and have been watching various television channels that bring about discussions ranging from expressing sympathies to speculating all plausible reasons for the crash.

It has to be accepted fact that so far we have seen the crash from one angle only.  There has been enough focus on how the civilians rushing to the crash site to offer help to the victims, both survivors and dead without bothering about caste, creed, language or religion.  There have been enough opinions on how the crash occurred and some so called experts even talked on how the pilot could have avoided the tragedy.  Alas! If all ifs and buts could have saved the tragedy!!

It has to be accepted that an accident is an accident and no amount of ifs and buts could have saved it.  Moreover, there is no point in giving suggestions to the pilot as the accident has already occurred.

Being present in Mangalore at the time of this gruesome tragedy and watching the events that unfolded closely ever since and even sharing the information and opinion with the international media like Reuters, Associated Press, WAM and many other news agencies which hardly have any presence in Mangalore, I came across certain incidents which I felt I should share with the esteemed readers of daijiworld.

When Maravoor hill area adjacent to the Bajpe runway was burning, with the entire world watching helplessly at the ghastly tragedy, some great souls rushed to the spot to give all possible help in the rescue operation.  But unfortunately one petty shop located close to the plane crash site made fortune out of the tragedy which shows how low people can stoop down to and exploit the situation when people died in hundreds burning in the inferno following the tragedy.  When life and death is uncertain in this world we do not know how long this shop owner would be able to enjoy the fortunes he made out from the situation arising out of the tragedy.

When no food or drink was available anywhere close to the crash site this petty shop owner thought it right to increase the cost of the stuff available with him five times the cost price.    He made a fortune within a few hours and exhausted the stock following which he closed down the shop for the day even when people were desperate to quench their thirst or fill their empty stomachs, especially after slogging continuously at the rescue site.  I do not wish to elaborate further but leave it to the readers to digest this unfortunate and shameful but true incident.

On day two of the crash there was heavy security at the crash site   on realizing that there was possibility of the black box and other valuable evidences and valuables such as gold getting into the wrong hands.  And tragically what was feared was happening.   Many people who visited the crash site carried with them the remnants of what was left after the inferno exclaiming “this piece could be treasure to remember”!  Imagine how people could even think of it at that moment of time.   However, I was shaken by a small incident at the crash caught my attention.  Several people had started to come to the crash site from far away places as if it was a tourist place.   Policemen were doing their duty of not allowing common people to enter the site.  However, one gentleman (if he can be called so) forcibly tried to enter the area and when the police tried to stop him he entered into an altercation with the police.  He was saying that he wants to click the photograph of the crash in his mobile phone very close from the crash site.  “I want to click the picture to show it to my little kids back home on how the crash had happened and how the crash site looked”!   Of course, the police did not allow him to barge in.  But one shudders to think the reasons people have to enter into a fight with the security men.

The third incident was even more shocking as a few individuals were trying to take advantage of this unfortunate incident.   When people were shocked and numb following the crash some people were eying the gold and other valuables that was strewn at the crash site.  It was a team of volunteers which kept an eye on such unscrupulous elements and they even caught some of them.  So when we look from another angle it is sad, unfortunate and shameful that people can stop down to such levels even at a time of a catastrophe like the air crash in Mangalore!

Canards spread - Don't Fly on Air India Express!

Many must have heard such a silly statements being uttered by people soon after the air crash tragedy. When I was ready to fly on May 26th evening flight from Mangalore Dubai a couple of known people asked me "Are you flying by AI Express?, Don't you know it's not safe?'

I politely answered them saying accidents do occur all over the world very often.  No one is sure what destiny or fate awaits them.  We don't know where our fate is written. There are regular road accidents like bus, car, two-wheeler and accidents can occur even while walking and we have seen many such instances.  But Just because of that we don’t stop plying by bus, car of two wheelers? Do we?

Mangalore Airport - Still Under Shock:

The atmosphere at the Mangalroe Airport is not the same as the one I experienced earlier when departing from Mangalore or on arrival. There is a gloomy atmosphere everywhere.  People gather and talk only about the crash.  There is sympathy on every face  including that of the check-in counter staff, Immigration office and Airport authority staff...everyone's eye are sad and gloomy  as if they want to convey many things but cannot find  proper words to do so.

"We miss the smile and joy that inbound passengers carry when they land and queue-up for immigration clearance" said one immigration officer on duty during my departure from Mangalore.  They explain how earlier people were rushing to clear immigration and baggage with so much of joy. But now they come with forlorn faces with a depressing look with little or no smile.   I can only hasten to add that it is really a very very sad site...

Passengers' Discipline:

During my last four years of frequent flying between Mangalore Dubai and vice versa I have not seen the kind of discipline I witnessed during my recent Mangalore-Dubai trip.  No mobile calls or SMS tones could be heard after boarding the flight.   Passengers behaved politely and decently with the crew and even while landing there was no noise of the mobile phone ringing.  Passengers did not try to get up from their seat before landing which was a common sight earlier.  What a change!

Of course lot of changes, lots of improvements behavior and attitude… but …. at what cost?

    Very nice article !!
People learn by making mistakes. For everything there is a patience which people don't have it. Accident or tragedy has no reason after occurance. People try to improve, learn and avoid and thats the future of success. People can't be happy by stealing or taking some advantages of these situation. A person will be success only if he thinks about the people who are in difficult situation than him and that's what make them success.
Till today people make mistakes, correct and learn. As you said this will keep on going in real life of human being. I don't blame anyone in this tragedy as the pilot also has his family and he left them with tears. My prayer to all travellers to be a safe journey, whichever the transport they use.
May god bless with good strength to the tragic effected family.

    Dear Walter,
Imagine all the sorrow attached to this tragedy and the gold ornaments being stolen from the crash site then. It is my faith in God that tells me, no one can be happy if they try to enjoy or make money out of such things when there is so much pain associated with the stuff they stole. Today or tomorrow that person will lose more than he can ever imagine.

A fantastic article opening the eyes of a lot of people as to how deep we humans have sunk. looking for opportunities and material gain at some one else's tragedy. Yet some comments are utterly disgusting. In the face of such a massive tragedy to have hit our city, we still talk about religion and religious affiliations. Was our God ive in taking away the lives of these 158 souls? Did he choose between a hindu, a muslim , a christian or an agnostic?........Some of these comments are simply sick. My advice to these guys is simple...just visit a home where someone has lost a loved one and see the pain, before posting trash here. And imagine yourself in their place. maybe it will help clear your polluted brains.

    Dear Walter,

A very nice article. It is really pity that there are people (evils ?) who eyes on some benefits from such an incident.
I was on my way to the Mangalore Airport to fly in this particular flight on its return to Abu Dhabi.
When we reached the site the smoke was still going on. But, I decided not to go the area as I believed it is more appropriate to give the rescue workers freedom to their job.
Furthermore, although I am an amateur photographer having a camera on hand at that time, I could not think of taking the pictures as I feel satisfied when people enjoy my shots and the images from the scene will be very beneficial as a photographer but they will never satisfy you as a 'human being'.
I salute each and every one who were part of rescue efforts especially the nearby villagers, firefighters, police and other officials, all the AI Express staff who were struggling to co-op with the situation.
May the Almighty save all of us from such incidents.

Dear Editor in chief , Daiji world

I read your “The other angle of Air carsh tragedy……..
The situation you mentioned after the carsh , petty shop made a fortune by increasing prices is pathetic. However regarding Mangalore Int. airport I would like to comment.
    1. The Mangalore int. apt runway is most critical in India in terms of landing and take off.
    2. The runway length is short of 1000 feet as required by standard norms
    3. In emergency landing and take off there is no way that rescue force can reach to site of accident as we have witnessed last Saturday (21st may)
    4. It was reported in some media that ILS (Instrument landing system ) was not working which is essential for night landing for precision landing (specially in the night). When Dubai - Mangalore flight was trying to land the time was 06.05 AM
Unless above put in order no one can guarantee of safe landing & take off, question of survival at emergency landing. The alternative is shift another location. The authorities responsible are silent. The fact yet to be know. Will they let the public the truth??? Unless public interest litigation filed against the culprits no can be booked under the law.

    Praveen, Mangalore - Abudhabi.

Hi praveen, No doubt- Boeing 737- 800 is one of the best aircraft both in terms of operational cost / fuel and baggage holding area. The flight crashed at mangalore Aircraft registration VT-AXV is hardly 3 years old. The same aircraft suppose of operate to mangalore on the day. I did not meant that boeing the bad, but other aircrafts operate to mangalore like IC and other low cost airlines are very old aircraft. More over you cannot have ILS on these types of aircraft. To have CAT II or CAT III everyone must be qualifited and trained for that. CAT III or CAT III B can land with very low visibility(50M). however based on the civil aviation approval. In abudabi and Dubai Airport CAT IIIB installed, Everyone trained. however GCAA - (General civil Aviation Authority- AUH) gave authority to land only 200 Meters or Wide body A/c and 250 Meters of narrow body A/C (A320/A319/B737 etc. But in Europose most the time its foggy and they were allowed to land even with a lowvisitibity of 40-50 meters. Hope this is information is very clear to you and everyone. Once again What I meant in my earlier comment was EVERY ONE MUST BE EQUIPPED AND TRAINED - Ground personnel (ATC ) TO Operating Equipment i.e Aircraft, Captain and first officer(co pilot)

Walter the editor...ur right what u said, infact I commented last week in times of India on people behaviour in the flight which my comment was not published. I said Indians specially south, think that flying is like travelling in the local bus. Well if tragedies are the only way to descipline people flying..then many more tragedies should happen...I dont mind being a part of the tragedy.
I had a bitter experience in my travel in emirates to Blr in April where some cartoons thought they were above the law and air safety instruments, risking another 200 peoples life.. when the flight landed...they say they were cousins of the Bellary reddy brothers...there by torturing an innocent Muslim family..
I had a duty free bottle in my hand and for the instance I thought will smash on that crazy characters face...But i could not do it as I didnt want my family's smile to fade away.
    Jai ho...

I think the greedy, stingy shop keeper was a student of school of economics. He understood the meaning of the phrase “SUPPLY and DEMAND”. He applied it in a very good manner but at wrong place. We can only call such people as SADIST. We can find such people in all walks of life.

Joshi, Muscat you seems to be suffering from certain phobia. Why on earth you bring terrorism and New Life while commenting on an article based on the most tragic incident that ever struck Mangalore? It's sad that even when a tragedy of this magnitude strikes, people like you are bent on dividing the society. The shopkeeper mentioned in Walter's article is much better than you since he plays with the material wealth of the people while persons like you play with emotions of commoner. He for a day kept humanity aside and thought just about himself and his family at the cost of others' wealth.

But persons like you are a blemish on humanity for you play with the emotions of people every now and then and at the cost of blood. See the persons who rushed to the aid of the people in grief on that ill-fated day. I don't think so that anyone of them knew to whom were they reaching to or whose bodies were they carrying. They coud not differentiate between Hindus, Christian or Muslims or Keralites of Kannadigas. They saw their fellow human beings suffering and rushed in to help them.

Mangalore is still much better and safer place to live in becuase persons like you are not residing here and those who share similar thoughts like that of yours are very few in number. Who knows when the Last Bell rings, you may well be cared by a terrorist or New Life guy too for there's only 'I'm' between possible and 'im'possible and not others.

The other angle to route cause of air crash is the possible malfunctioning of navigational system during the landing process caused by a cell-phone switched on by an ignorant passenger.many passengers switch on their mobile phones while landing as if they are in a race to inform their arrival. It is also possible that someone did not switch off the mobile phone while taking off from Dubai, despite being warned by the cabin crew, and it started searching for signals as the flight descended at Mangalore airport, which could have interfered with the functions of the landing system. It should be noted that all three recent air crashes — the first one at Russia killing the Polish Prime Minister and his team, the second one at Libya last month and now Air India Express at Mangalore — all occurred while trying to land, thereby strengthening my suspicion about the possible interference in the navigational system by cell phone signals.

Inna Lillaahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raaji'oon

Yeah, sure we say this statement when someone dies. Also some of us may say this sentence when they lose something, suffer a setback or harm. But………..do you know what it means?
Sure, everyone know that it obviously means 'To Allaah we belong and to Him is our return.'
But .....….do you REALLY, TRULY understand these words and their implications in a Muslim's life?

It means …whatever we have is not really ours. It belongs to Allaah.
Take a look around you everything you see, all that you have and all that there is….in you, on you, around you….belongs to Allaah, alone.
It is Allah Who has given you all the property and goods you possess, and that He is the true Owner of them all.

So the cars that you own, the houses that you live in, the businesses you possess all truly belong to Allaah. The kids that He blessed you with, the health that He gave you, the time that He has allowed you are all Allah's property.
Even the bodies we live in and the life that we have belongs to Allaah alone.

"And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth…." (Surah Aal-Imraan:180)
"The kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in them belongs to Allah. He has power over all things." ( Surat al-Ma'ida: 120)
'Say: 'To Allah belongs the East and the West…' (Surah al-Baqarah:142)

OK,let us look at the facts. Yes, I deplore the behaviour of the mean people who exist everywhere. But the facts are:

    - The pilot overshot the runway by 2000 feet. This can not be the fault of the mobile phones, since he can see the runway clearly unless he had the plane on autopilot all the time.

    - It is certainly not the fault of Mangalore Airport and the runway. It can easily handle this Aircraft. I have flown so many years to Mangalore with Indian Airlines, Jet and Kingfisher. They flew Boeing 737 or Airbus. And all that on the old runway which is almost half as long.

So, if you want to blame someone, blame it on Air India for all its negligence apart from going on strike every other day.

Truly, Mr. Walter Nandalike has exposed the other side of the tragedy which most of us visualise but dare not speak since we are overcast by the human tragedy, similarly private airlines made quick bucks by charging double the fare and a wanted terrorist tried to sneak in the next day, not knowing the Mumbai ATS at Bajpe Airport were not overshadowed by the tragedy but were alert on duty. In short, good exposure by The Editor-in-Chief of Daijiworld.

Elaboate & well written article by Walter Nandalike. It gives us the ground reality of site of Air crash. I really appreciate & salute the volunteers who offered their services at the site of plane crash in rescuing the surrvied passengers & salvaing the debris. The other angle of the air crash tragedy is really shameful but can not help it and control it and even difficult to believe it!!!.

Dear walter , Good articl wriiten by you, in my experience, i use to travel every month twice to mumbai while i was working in offshore for 14 yrs. From mumbai to offshore by helicopter and i think i had more flying experience while i was working in offshore.Only when i was travelling from mumbai to mangalore i was not feeling confirtable while landing in BAJPE airport, after 3/4 yrs i started to fly up to goa from mumbai and take a bus to mangalore. While going bacK flightfrom mangalore to mumbai.i was feeling that time the run way maybe not designed for landing bigger aircraft. IT IS BETTER HAVE A NICE AIRPORT TO LAND AND TAKE FROM SOUTH KANARA \PREFEREABLY NEAR UDIPI and this airport can be used for flying training .

According media and search engines describes Mangalore airport is dangerous. This is an international tag for our favorite airport which may be waiting for another disaster? Shouldn’t we ask our politicians why is this dangerous airport being continued for the innocent people of Mangalore region? There are places for a new airport long and wide enough for the airports runway available in Suratkal Belman, Kundapur or Kolagiri. MIT in Manipal the educational hub of coastal Karnataka has the aeronautical engineering batch introduced in 2009 and are in a dire need for an airstrip for its training and flying purpose thus it is believed vast area is under survey for MIt’s aviation college around Manipal . It is obvious Dr VS Acharya home minister of Karnataka promised an airport for Udupi district a couple of years back during an inaugural ceremony of a multi-story building in Manipal.
Ministers,Civil aviation and other concerned officials must realize a table top runway is not our choice while coastal Karnataka has plain, plateau kind of land in abundant

Good one Walter. You touched each and every subject. Last one regarding decipline - I used to feel ashamed about our passengers behaviour while take off and landing, regarding phone usage/removal of belt immediately after touch down/opening upper cabin to remove handbag immediately after touch down. I was so upset in my recent visit (April 15h ), I lost my patience and shouted at few passengers around me for removing hand baggage immediately after touch down and standing during the course of Aircraft still in runway. The worst part is, one passenger was carrying my duty free shop bag and wanted to get down. I shouted at him saying, are you crazy, what makes you get up so early and remove baggage without checking whose it is. With that shout all of them sat quietly till air craft stationed. According to me those who do this they know about decipline,( since he is working in gulf country. Most of the sheru's live like billy in gulf country or they know the result ) but they do it deliberately when they reach home country.

Good article by Mr. Walter. most of the comments to the article are also made with passion and concern.
The faithful in the U.S.A. got more devout after the world trade centre bombings(with planes).
Everything happens for a reason.... as someone has said - God does everything for the good.... With mere human intelligence, we fail to dicepher as to - what good is the crash. its tough to understand, but we must accept such incidents as the will of the Almighty.
as the American theoligian - Reinhold Neibhur once said in his prayer "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can change, And wisdom to know the difference."

The longer version has these additional lines:
"Living one day at a time Enjoying one moment at a time Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen.

May the Almighty grant us "GRACE". I guess, many would say Amen (so be it)

Everyone is trying to be the judge and decide on the reasons for the disaster which is ridiculous. As a five year old kid (many decades ago) I have travelled to Mangalore from Bombay via Belgaum on a different aircraft and still landed safely with no problems. Probably the runway at that time was never the same as now ! Therefore, please do not draw unfair conclusions. Even with a top class airport and with a top class aircraft and with a super pilot accidents can always happen. It is all in the hands of our creator. Please do not blame unnecessarily without knowing the actual facts. All I can say is that on the given day everyone has to go whether you like it or not.
Let us all accept the bare facts and continue to live along. Don't be the judge for something where you know nothing about.
    God Bless You All.

TV news reports said that while Air India was on strike during the last two days, almost all the private airlines increased their fares significantly to take advantage of the increase in demand. Abraham Coutinho, your first comment has evaluated the article rightly. Everyone should read it prior to biased conclusion. At a given circumstances nobody can judge the shop owner’s first reaction to the crisis. He was interviewed in the TV, worth listening objectively. Everyone learns some lessons in a shorter version. I don’t think so if writer travels after a gap of some time, same disciple will be maintained inside the aircraft or thereafter. Taking mobile pictures for the shorter memory should be taken lightly.

    As reported by some news
visibility was LOW, and slight rain
pilot was flying Non Precission approach (VOR/DME) which needs to be constantly changed by the heading of the pilot
also the VOR/DME changes with respect to magnetic field/ earths geographical location from time to time but a very small factor so it is ignored
pilot couldnt probably see runway so he landed accidently on the runway (so thats why tyre burts) because he did not flare the plane and plane reached maximum stress and tyre burst
normally the pilot flares or pulls up the nose so that the back wheel gets slight pressure and then the nose but here all three probably hit at the same time causing stress
once the tyre is burst controlling is difficult but CAN be controlled using rudder , however pilot maybe or maynot have done this also applying emergency brakes wouldnt work if the tyreburst before
then pilot tried to take off again, however planes speed is low, flaps were set at 40 (landing flaps) this increased drag on the aircraft causing the plane to take sometime to climb, so he probably hit a tree during the climb due to excess drag
then the plane broke and burst into flames while moving down the valley
for a plane to center at its CG (Centre of Gravity) all four forces of flight must be balanced.
This is only my theory we have to wait for news from AI express

Very good article by the editor.Mangalore airport needs improvement if the safety and standard requirements are not been met so far.we have special departments to do that work. The air crash is an eye opener to concentrate on the safety factor of the airport. As per the mobile phone usage in the flight, many people who are well educated and who have an idea of the signal interfearece with pilots plane controls, switches off his or her mobile phone thruogh out the journey. But how abt uneducated people? In the plane they just inform us to switch off but do not tell why???!!!Thats y people purposely keep the mobile on to see wat will happen???!!!.I suggest to airport authorities to educate the passengers properly b4 boarding the plane abt the drawbacks of mobile phone signals in the operation of the flight.Inspite of that if the passenger keeps his mobile phone on, then fine that passenger heavily.

    Thu, May 27 2010

There is no proper ILS system in Mangalore, considering the dangerous landing area
ILS is a very easy instrument
ILS stands for Instrument Landing Approach System and it is very easy and very helpful
there are three types ILS CAT I/II and III
in Mangalore we have ILS CAT I which decends the aircraft from 2000 feet automatically to 800 very safely and the system knows all the obstructions in the area but after 800 the pilot has to take manual control
unfortunately the ILS works only on the other side RW24 not RW06
IX812 was landing on RW06 which dosent have any automatic landing system
if it had then the crash could be prevented
BUT ILS IS VERY EXPENSIVE INSTRUMENT and INDIA DOSENT WANT TO SPEND MONEY
But they should put in such places WHERE landing is difficult
but they still use VOR/DME approach which is very outdated and not recommended by FAA anymore

hopefully now India will buy ILS for all runways in Mangalore
    In Kuwait both two runways
    have ILS system
thats why no crash and they have CAT III ILS that means the plane lands automatically pilots dont have to do anything to land the plane just watch it land and control engines

    Thu, May 27 2010

    Dear Walter,
Your observations and insights of the accident provide human instincts, no different than one would come across in any other country. You find scavengers and vultures every where. But what amazing are the lessons learned and applied by the passengers effective immediately that you observed in the plane and in the airport. That shows our people of Mangalore have “closeness” towards each other, no matter where we are, and feel the pains and sufferings, as if we are part of the situation requiring resolution. No doubt, we are mortals and our destiny is not known to us but one thing is clear, we take pride as Mangaloreans and share sorrow and happiness even from a distance.

One Indian Australian wrote in the Daijiworld not too long ago, that there is a place called “Mangalore” in Australia and he introduced the place to his children saying let us drive to Mangalore. Of course he could not drive across the Indian Ocean. The message is we Mangaloreans cling to each other and the native place. The gloomy picture you observed in the Bajpe airport will remain forever because every one there can and do relate to each other and memory is very powerful not to let go. Even though I have not seen or met any one of the souls that perished in AI Express, trust me, I feel their loss from a distance of 10, 000 miles and the Bajpe airport would not be the same, as it once enjoyed the jubilant smiles and laughter.

There was room to avoid this fatal accident. What we do not know, and people are not questioning is, was the pilot aware that he landed half-way down the runway? OR did he loose his senses since he had no communications with the air tower after he got the signal to land. If the pilot did not loose his senses, he would not have landed half way on the runway. What was the condition of the pilot after he got the signal to land? No one knows. That should be the key for investigation.

While I do not dispute or comment negetively on Walter's observations, this accident has openned the hearts of many and helping hands have been stretched to help others affected. It is also noteworthy to highlite that there were also people who did not act appropriately at the time of this ghastly tragedy.
Human beings by their nature are different. For example when some one robs somebody, some one klls somebody and someone hates somebody.
While this tragedy made people in a somber mood I think many will agree with me that that were good samaritans.
Certain peoples behaviour may not be appropriate, then again I dont think we can cahnge this. It is upto evry individual to think and act appropriate at these moments.
Walter thanks for sharing theses observations, good hearts always feel the pain when these things happen.

Well Written article Walter. Its really sad that people are using such incidents for their own selfish. I would like to comment on your saying "accidents do occur all over the world very often". Yes its true. But at the same time we must take the precaution. This is actually our (specially mangaloreans) attitude. CHALTHA HAI. Plane crashed, 160 died, and who cares, we have to get back to our work and think about own future!!. And we use the same sub standard facilities given to us without raising our voice or without supporting those who raise thier voice. Dont you feel scared while travelling via NH-17 from Mangalore to UDUPI? Yet we travel by those stupid buses or use the road. I hardly use NH-17 just becuase of safety and use all inner roads eventhough it take few extra time. There are so many bus owners who are well educated and well known about the importance of safety. Still they cannot control thier bus drivers. Finally we blame on the condition of the Roads. This is all because we mangaloreans have attitude of listening and not bothering.

Excellent information, but heart breaking..., what has the world come to really?? To take pictures of a crash site to show your kid? How heartless can we be? Anyways what are we talking of lay people here, there were tons of media people and TV channels making loads of money out of this? What hot sizzling information to add next was their thought? Has anyone 'ALIVE' thought even once what would my state be if there was anyone I knew had died in the crash? Should I give a good pose for the media so they get a good picture when I cry? Should I take a picture with my dead burnt relative/ child/ wife/ husband/ friend so the rest of the world can see? Or I forget, should I send a picture to some ruthless soul who wants to show this picture to his kids? How far can mankind go?

When humans become consciously aware that there is a possibility for them to lose their lives, if they do not take responsibility for their actions, then they meekly surrender to the rules.

Since the accident is fresh in people's memory and with the awareness being spread that maybe the electronic landing system of that ill-fated flight might have been affected, because of people switching on their mobiles even before the plane could land, people have now meekly decided to obey the rules for fear of the possibility of public retribution from other passengers, or because of the fear of death, if another accident did occur.

The more important thing is, it remains to be seen, for how long we donkeys can follow the rules...

I have been watching shoking news, reviews, talks discussions about how the accident happend ? why happend ? what could have happend. bla .. bla bla.. Speculatons says that Captain might have landed midway of the run way!!.. or try to abort landing... or try to land and since no space to stop he migh have try to take off at the same speed... All these buts and if are BULLSHIT. When we have the responsibile eye witness why we have to discuss all these? The eye witness and responsbile persons are ATC- AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS!!. CRASH HAPPEND in front of their eyes at mangalore. they are the final RESPONSIBLE people or the last person who contracted captain of aircraft. Why cant we question them? At the time of landing where they are? what was the instruction give to the captain at the time of landing? Are the instruction given to the captain was CORRECT?. .. LET US DISCUSS THESE MATTER FIRIST. Catch hold of those who were on duty(if any) and question them along the Voice recording and Digital data recorder. First of all ATC people must question and let the accident investigation team open Black box and try to decode the data...

    Hi All

I have been reading articales and also the complete coverage of the disaster that has struck mangalore. there are a few points where i would like to put some light on.
    1. there is a lot of speculation on what might have happened and we are talking as if v r experts. it's an airplane not a car or truck. for so many years there was never a problem with the runway or the planes how com v r to talk of it today. infact for so many years flights hav taken of and landed when the runway was even smaller.
    2. hav u noticed in the daiji news that the first body was identified by the mobile ringing. ny guesses how and when did the mobile com on? time to learn the value of patience my friends. to wait for the captain's instructions to even get up from ur seat.
    3. it's easy for us to blame it on corruption, politicians and various other people. but what r v doin something abt it???
    4. keep in mind that with bad roads, electricity, pollution there r more deaths and yet more to die. accidients almost amounts to twice the number of deaths than this single mishap. has nyone even spoken abt it?? safty first is it??? its time v introspect and act upon it than giving mind driven theories abt what happened and what would hav happened. :)

Eye opener at 7 months labor! India- Mangalore, like any other city has occupied by billionaires, millionaires, rich, middle class and the poor. It’s sad to see people do not even have anything to eat and sleep on the road! Same time business man shoots price of land, building, rent etc! Even the milk, rice, vegetables supplied by government in similar situations. Well the media promoting their business by exaggerating certain news which could hit number of visits. Appreciate those who tried their best to save the life. We always have animals in the society. Can’t imagine a life without road accident, same with flight, train etc can we imagine a world living with only innocent people!! We wish, but it does be a disaster. It’s nice to see Dubai on screen but while in Dubai its nice the greenery back in Mangalore. Keep up the good work daiji, too many things to do in the long run and I wish you best of luck.

Humans are good when they are born, but the virus of greed and selfishness inflict them when they grow up, may be the parental influence, peers or circumstances play a havoc on their lives.
Hence the reaction to any situations like celebrations or mourning's, incidents or accidents are different from human beings to human beings. In short, air india should not be allowed to fly and people should avoid using them as far possible and take alternative routes or airlines. Look at other low cost airlines like air arabia on their neatness and promptness of flights. I am not buying walter's theory of destiny and fate and i feel it is negative way of thinking life not taking action when it is in your hand. You have spoken the exact words whihc I was thinking right form the moment of the crash that despite the help of the villagers which should be appriciated how many of them really helped selflessly ? The thought was going through my mind looking at the body language of some of the villagers when they were eager to talk to media with their sunglasses raised on the forehead that Saying INDIAN CULTURE IS ..HELP OTHERS. I came to know about some of the oranments missng from the body on the way between the crash site & mortuary.

People form Dubai might have had enough gold or other expensive items one or two of whihc would mean a fortune for any greedy eyes there even if it was stck on the charred body of any victim. Am sure there would have been thousands of things scattered in that forest, expensive things from peoples luggaage or dutyfree items and am sure there are many eye's who were looking to grab as much as possible. Its good to know atleast the police or other security agency's understood this reality and cordened off this area atleast to protect whever remained thereafter.

    Appriciated your article.

Jaimini P.B - Like you, I also got one local train tragedy experience in early 1980 in Bombay. My wife boarded V.T bound ladies front compartment and I into next gents. This fast train changed to slow track at high speed at Byculla at 9.40 A.M. Office going time. I was going for shopping. Train hit the flatform, dwindled and all compartments rolled to other side. Our front two bogies got detached & stood safe on track. Station filled with full dust. When it settled down, I could see what had happened. It was a very serious accident. So many died. I told my wife to keep away & safe. I went to help the injured in Ladies 1st class. The Big Fire Brigade Stand was just 2 minutes away, came 40 minutes later. Behind them came the police and started Lathi Charging. We were helping the injured. Some were watching from distance. We brought out some from the train. When police came, I was helping a lady to keep her both feet on my both shoulder to bring her down. Anyway, I brought her down. Made her sit. Gave a glass of water in her hand and escaped from the Lathi Charge. Ran searching my wife.Found her on the bridge. Immdtly moved out of Rly.Stn. thinking why should I go back? Let the Fire Brigade and Police rescue if any one is alive after 40 Minutes. I was very angry for Lathi Charging. But I was wrong. They knew, as you said "while rescuing , the stealing or snatching gold on the other side was feared". Who knows that had happened or not? Only, I could not think of it.

During the unforseen event always people spontaneously plunge in action to help the needy. In case of Mangalore air crash the turnout was exemplary.Mangalore has always been known for good public behaviour.Photgraphs in Daijiworld covering event of air crash is a testimony for this.Amid good things certain petty things always happen also by self seekers.I was shocked to read the news that among the volunters who were on rescue work on the fateful day there were miscreants also which was noticed by some Police officer and taken for task at right time.(who were stealing valuables from dead bodies)Like wise shop keepers behaviour to make money by selling the goods for higher price is also another way of exploitng the situation. These type of attitudes prevail in accident sites,in hospitals, education field ,police stations, poliitical field etc., Mangalore is not an exeption to it.Exploitation is always a exploitation .. nothing else. Let us salute the people who hav done good during emergency situation.

Overall, excellent team work by Mangaloreans. I am from Kasaragod and it always strikes me how efficient Mangaloreans are when it comes to team work.

I wish we could do something about the media scavengers who reaches the scene later like vultures and start poisoning the minds by uneccessary debates and accusations. We need to have a limit and we need to draw that line. We saw some of them even blocking the rescue operations and not even allowing people to cry. Let's not make show of others agony, we need reporting, and Daiji has excellent work, but I still don't understand why we need 20 odd mikes and camera for an interview. Why can't they record with one mike (unbranded) and then distrubute it to everyone.

Being a webmaster and ideator, I have been following the online reporting by local websites in Mangalore and Kasaragod, and should comment excellent reporting. You guys can take a leaf from the rescue operation and think on collaberating, instead of competing with your peers to provide much better experience.

Even if it would have gone down into the valley without hitting the pole, many peope would have survived. This is nothing but TIME.

    Dear Walty
I Would like to add two more angles of observations. Times have changed and with it the mode of accidents -Really something like this disaster could not have been envisaged

in any wildest dreams but then the messages condolences or whatever never change do they? Is it possible to'experience anyone's greatest loss -Walty? Can these stereotyped messages be stopped for heaven's sake? Just being there would suffice -woudn't it? Two weeks down the line it may be business as usual for others but then what about those who have to live with the agony? I think some sense should prevail before letting loose these age old and worn out messages!

Next the hue and cry about the ' black box'- Pray can it erase black memories? What corrective steps have been taken thus far in earlier air disasters based on the findings of a black box? Obviously nothing. Any one of the twenty five theories floating may be correct but to what avail? The concerned may have definitely zeroed on the cause within minutes but as usual will be kept 'under wraps' for reasons best known to them.

Sure everything is destined Walty but we never believe that we are puppets on a string do we? So we call the survivors ' Death-beaters'- give condolence messages.....Life sure is the greatest teacher but it seems we never like to learn......

Wonderful article.I can imagine the feelings of the families of the deceased. A person with human values will never act like this. this is a real action of a self centered person. when there is opportunity people will take advantage.they don't have any sympathy towards fellow human beings,no respect no value.
doesn't matter a person educated or not educated if they are greedy they don't care about anybody or even God.

Dear Vikas from Doha. I very well agree with you.

The Bajpe airport is a true example of corruption, convenience and political influence.

There is a hue and cry about the so called "other table-top" run-ways across the world. But have the technicalities into the acceptance of these airports been considered. One thing that comes to mind immediately is the permission only for ed air-craft types to land at such locations.

Yes, an accident has occured. Noone wanted it to happen. Thats why it is called an accident. But what is and will be done to ensure this will not happen again???? Only time will tell.

The blinding corner of a road is immediately rectified if an accident occurs is it not? Is the blame given to an errant driver or a speeding motor cyclist? I do not think so.

So more than speculating on why the pilot slammed the brakes or super revved the engine, the fact is staring all of us in the face. Specifications of the airport need to be reviewed first. Other factors will come later.

Good observation of Walter on the realistic behavior of people. In a society whether Mangalore or elsewhere, there are people of all traits. If society is so perfect, then it is against the nature. There is always a imbalance whether in nature/ people or culture.

S.Joshi's comment is a bit harsh on Shahnawaz. I dont see anything wrong that Shahnawaz or walter has written here. Opinion differs
from one to other and that is what we are and is healthy.

Temptation of possessing quick wealth is hidden in most. But whether through proper means or not, is individualistic. One place where such thing is hardly seen is perhaps Burma. About 12 years ago when I was headig to Bagan from Mandalay in Myanmar for a history visit, I was stunned to see the honesty of people. Absolutely no cheating, no foul language, no stealing and only hard-work. There were few wallets (purses) lying on the bus seats while people disembarked. Nobody picked them up as they did not belong to them. Curiously when I pointed them to the driver, he said -they would eventually be put in the temple hundi. I only saw poor families everywhere, but golden pagodas in Rangoon, Golden Budha due to donation from people during my 10d stya.

Poverty does not mean greed for some. But in a developed or developing country, poverty brings opportunity for some. With gold nuggets scattered around, brings in temptation for some.

Life with high level of expectations end up in good/bad deeds.

    We are still Mangaloreans

Before this article by Mr walter there was one more article published couple of days back which stated as salute Mangalore.Where in have seen all comments on positive side. In one phase there were people who worked for the needy, though in Mangalore we find different diversity but during this incident all were one.Feel some thieves might have tried to take advantage, including the shop keeper. we can't come to conclusion with Mr Walter comments, as these points matter to only some people whom we might count them in fingers, there were thousand involved to help the needy/to assist the police and rescue team during this incident. I salute those people who have showed humanity by extending their support/sincerity towards those people who lost their lives in this ill-fated Flight

Secondly I would like to know that shop keeper name, wherein I can personally see him and question him what he has done with the money collected from customer who were present with high tension attending this situation. This was not a good move by this shop keeper. This shows his cruel means of extracting money from the sorrowful tensed customer.

Lets us all pray that this kind of incident would be the last one in Mangalore. sorry I am not being mean but can’t see those pain who have lost their loved ones/those photos of funeral/story of victims who were visting Mangalore with some good intention. Now we realize how it feels as whenever we hear about the crash anywhere in the world it was just a breaking news for all of us we never used to think so deeply/we never used to think about their family pain, this time we have realized how it feels after seeing the death very closely, My hearltly condolence to all those people who have left us. May their soul rest in peace

Good Observation , Editor. This may be new to Mangalore , but not totally new to India. During Mumbai Riots color tv's , refrigerators , washing machines were robed off , stocked and later sold. During Gujrat earthquake special gujariwala teams dashed to site. During mumbai floods one litre mineral water bottle sold @ Rs.50/-. I honestly endorse ur view that an accident is accident and still life moves on. Mera Bharat Mahan. Mr. Shahnawaz Kukkikatte, Debai/Udupi -
Crash is sad event. Let us pray for the souls.
That petty shop owner is one of the few who first saw the plane crashing and survivors walking. Perhaps they were treated/given water etc in his hotel. He was interviewed by the TV people. His name is somewhat as Shashidhara or Shridhara. I heard him on TV. It makes no differference whether he is a Mangalorean or outsider. What he did on the day of crash was a good deed. He did not run way. Jacking up the price for profit is every business man's attitude. But in what situation? is left to him.

When the merchandise were sold, he shut the shop and not kept open for the next day was purely his decision. He may be right. If kept open, I think, what he thought is, not possible for him to handle it properly. All the VIPs, Police, Politicians, Leaders and their men came there will only order him to supply which he can not refuse and God alone knows when and who will pay him. Further, as he said it is a small hotel. Who knows whether there was any servant/boy with him or not. Do not think, I am supporting or justifying his acts but only saying there is also another side to the story.

Every human behaves in his own way and specially in business, it is typical. A couple of years back when Gonu Cyclone hit Muscat, some merchants there increased the rate of water sold in plastic tubes/bulbs. But when it is known, the Government took strict action is a different story.

A good article Mr. Walter, however you are wrong in one particular detail. If somebody warns you against travelling in Air India , instead of regarding it as silly, you might want to give it some thought. To put it simply Air India represents the dark underbelly of our corrupt govt who have failed us over and over for sixty years. Many people assume we are going to be a superpower, but i ask you what is the need of all that if our govt can provide safe infrastructure, if it cant save its own people by building less risky airports and a better national airline. We are taking about that same airline which has a very bad history of air safety in the past 2 decades or so, the same airline where a mid air scuffle broke about between a pilot and a steward and right now a strike had been called by the employees just 2 days after this incident. Forget your low fares and fate, fate can be changed if you remain careful. Air disasters can happen any where and at any time but isn't it best to avoid something which you are sure will be a bad experience for you. I am amazed at how many people still want to travel with Air India inspite of its cruel history. If you look at the earlier reports of the accident, some tv channels displayed charred bodies in gruesome detail. All those scenes depict the anguish and suffering people experienced. It represents dreams shattered by our faith in our govt .So take a stand and say no to Air India for your family's sake. Better to be careful.....

    Hi
Our heart beats for India and its people. I have had the same experience when I was stuck unshaken during the Mumbai 26/7 floods. I have seen people die coz of food and water infront of me and i was watching them helplessly not able to move. During this time that localites made fast buck by selling food items which were sent by voluntary organisations for free distribution.
It was a a real nightmare and keeps reminding me of our values.
the incident what happened on last Saturday as explained by you in your article is a gorious one. The petty shop owner or the locals who made fortunes will never be happy in their life . Coz their selfishness will keep reminding them of their xins and will not allow them to make use of their shameless fortune. They will never be pardoned by the almighty.

Good Article..UAE's famous English Daily news paper "Khaleej Times" reported very next day after the aircrash that there were lot of thefts near the aricrash site.Khaleej even gave statistics about approximate GOLD carried by passengers. Yes..humanitarian work was going on at full speed on one side and stealing at the other side. This is common everywhere whether it is Bus,train or Plane crash & Mangalore is not an exception. I still remember my own experience when our bus fell near uppoor bridge (Udupi-Brahmavar-20years back),someone tried to open big bamboo basket instead of helping injured passengers. He jumped 2 metres & disappeared after seeing big cobra inside.

Indeed an eye opening article, highlighting the other side of the tragedy.

Opportunism is what the world is practising today and in some instances these opportunities are a creation of vested interests at the cost of thousands of lives. Take the case of Iraq, Afhanistan where thousands of innocent lives are lost everyday while some companies/individuals are minting money on the back of these man-made tragedies. Incidents narrated here are only the micro version of macro incidents taking place around the World. The only difference is that when it is happening in our own backyard, however small it is, it makes deep dents in our heart. People are blinded with selfishness. May God bless the world and save it from opportunists.

Dear Walter, that is a nice article giving the truth and bitter facts of the other side of the Air Crash Tragedy.
Yes you are very right, of people who will try to take advantage of any situation, like this one, to see what benefits them out of it. In a normal scenerio, tragedy like this sends waves of compassion and kindness in all people, but few can be selfish. What is it that you call a human heart, which allows you to walk over the dead and charred bodies, to pick up gold or other valuables?

Can we just sit back and think, what kind of death do I have in store for me? and when I die,do I take my pocessions and go? It is hard to believe that we still have few people of this selfish thought. Incidents like this, I thought will caution us with what death can be. But, in life, we have a ray of hope to hang on, till we know there are few good people, good samaritans, who have a human heart, like those neighbours at this crash site, youth from far n near by who worked day in and day out. May God bless all those who worked selflessly and may God bless the hearts of those, who still looked at it from selfish point.

I hardly give any comments for the article written in this site. But the article you wrote is worth reading. Our eyes are so filled and our heart is not accepting the fact of this tragedy until now. Also after seeing the photographs of the funerals in this site we were again cried silently and prayed for the family. I know a person who built house a year ago with Joy but lost his wife and childrens in this tragedy. He is alone now in his house. How we can console him?? There are families who lost their sons, daughters, mother, father, sisters, brothers and so on...What was their fault??? When i think about the people who died in that ill fated flight burning alive my heart brakes in pain. How much they would have cried for help... Even i seen some people here making fun of this tragedy while discussing regarding flying again. Some will not understand the pain until something bad will happen in their life.

I stil feel really shocked of the incident and just trying to realise the feeling those people have gone through after the accident. The death is on their face & must have strugled for help by watching their dear once dying on the next seat...! Ah!
Situations like these bring one another close and we portray bonding relations forgeting once religion/cast etc. There is no hatred, which is really good for humanity. I think we can live same way in our normal life too and why cant we try this.
Coming back to our attitude while flying, I think we should re-think the use of mobiles while on board and also un-buckling of the seat belts while the aircraft still on the run-way, geting up to opening the overhead bagage compartments. This has been a common practice while landing in Mangalore. We learn from our mistakes and this incident for sure will change all our Manglorean thinking on aircraft safety.
I think, me and my family along with 100's of fellow passengers were lucky to survive in 2008 when we were suppose to land in Magalore (from Abu Dhabi). A similar situation took place, when the same pilot (I think) almost touched the run-way and took-off to land in Cochin instead. 1st few minutes after take-off was really scary and our relatives at the airport too were surprised and freightened to see the aircraft take-off after almost had landed.

Walter, Wondeful article. Gives a lot of insight to attitudes of peoples and how different people respond to a tragedy.
Hope authorities respond well and take corrective actions wherever necessary to overcome shortcomings and prevent future tragedys. At this point in time there is no point in blaming the pilot for human error or blaming AAI for the runway etc etc. Need of the error is to investigate the accident with all honesty and rectify whats needed. Hope the enquiry doesnt end with making a fat report and gather dust in some shelf in the respective ministry.

Absolutely!! Bingo!!! These are two faced coins of Mangalore. One side we have witnessed people who tirelessly volunteered and other side who made business out of it. Sad that these kind of people do exist not only in mangalore, but probably through out the world. The only thing which we can feel proud of is, the volunteers outnumbered the "mouke ka faaida" mangaloreans. Jai Ho Mangalore. May peace prevail in Namma Kudla.

Dear Walter..I accept it. Stealing of jewellery, currency etc. is common in all the places where accidents take place whether it is bus, train or plane. One can see humanitarian work and Pilferage work at the same place at the same time and Mangalore is not an exception.I recall one true story..There were some survivers when plane crashed in the middle of the forests, those who survived the crash were killed by forest bandits and looted.I don't remember the name of Airlines.May be Rhodesian Airlines ? Not sure.Only differnce is that those bandits were uneducated, trible, rude people,But here well educated, cunning, opportunitist. Which one is better. I don't know.Do you have the answer ?

Well observed walter, I must say this is the other side of tragedy.
Air India is our national carrier and it is this sister company "Air India Express" that is profitable after several long years of struggle. The mangalore crash was the worst in a decade and not yet sure how it happened. This doesnt mean Air India express is not safe. Thanks to the AI staff for their quick positive reaction towards the crash, the helplines where on the TV screen in no time, control rooms were set up in five cities, and additional flights were organised for the victims families. Accidents can happen anytime and with any airline, but we still need to support Air India Express and pray for the victims and their families involved in the crash.

Whats written is right, But I certainly condemn the greedy act of the shop keeper who was after money even in the hour of need and grief. He too is a mangalorean and we now have to believe that all that shines is not gold and all thats white is not milk. Secondly, people coming to see the crash site, taking pictures are all common everywhere and not a special case with this incident. Since mobile phones have cameras, its handy for any one to click a photo. But one is not sure how long one will preserve these pictures. One cant stop short of talking about this crash which has claimed 158 innocent lives. The writer must be realistic and cant make assumptions. Any accident site across the globe shall attract visitors, comments, suggestions etc. We cant have utopian atmosphere.

Here I stongly condemn the act of the shop keeper who sold the merchandise at higher price, thus encashing this saddest situation to his advantage. I still question whether he is a mangalorean or some outsdier who is far away from mangalore.

Very unfortunate that some people like the vendor, the photographer and the thieves forgot the human value and wanted to benefit from the incident. I have heard from people back home how, many people came in from far places just to take away the gold spread all over. May be more police security was needed to prevent such people from entering the place.

Hope the discipline shown by people while landing or take off will continue in the future. During my flights, I have been watching with scare people fiddling with mobiles inside the flight and not following the instructions. It is high time that the crew see that all the passengers switch off the mobiles, and make it a punishable offence by law, so that everybody follows it. Who knows, the outcome of the black box report may show that there was techincal snap due to interference with mobile signals during the landing of this very ill fated aircraft this is one of the possibility. (Let's wait for the final report).

    Walty,
Brilliantly written article. "experts" gave their opnions but this truly showed a different shade to the tragedy. I wonder if the treasure hunters would have reacted the same way if it was their family on that flight

it's not the problem of Runway its problem with the aircraft. while landing the flight shakes.and does not seems to have control like any other flight. if it was a different flight there wouldn't be crash

Good one Mr. Walter, There is surely another angle of the air crash. The one thing that stuck me was the contamination of the crash site which will make the investigation difficult. I agree the many people came to help, all Mangaloreans united etc…But it is also true that things were not well organized. I dint comment on it then as people will take me wrong.

walty what you mentioned is right..but only for hardly one weeks' time..after that everything will be same as like earlier.. human beings never change..it's afterall mistake of authorities to handover charred bodies to the victim's family...better to be done mass burial..for one and all.. so no problem of claiming from any other side..so much after disaster people won't learn...it's nothing but a journey to god's home..and his wish.. jai ho..
