Udupi, Apr 15: Heavy rains and speeding wind were experienced in most places of Karkala taluk for about 90 minutes on Thursday April 14 evening. Several other places in Udupi and Kundapur taluk also received some rains.
Strong gale coupled with thunder and lightning were the main features of the rains in Karkala taluk. The rains, which were experienced between 3 pm and 4.30 pm, inflicted damages, strong winds blew at the same time. Roofs and tiles of several houses were blown away, while a number of electric poles fell to the ground.
A number of areca nut and other trees got uprooted in Kervashe village in Karkala taluk. A number of branches also were found strewn on the ground elsewhere. The house of Gulabi Poojarti from Doopadakatte Baidal was damaged after a mango tree fell on it. The taluk tahsildar visited the spot to assess the situation. The front roof of the house belonging to Clement D’Silva in Baidal caved in. Tiles of dozens of houses in Sanoor Parpale area were blown away by the winds.
Navunda, Nagur, Uppunda, Byndoor, and surrounding places in Kundapur taluk too received good rains.
In Dakshina Kannada district, Dharmasthala, Aladangady and Venoor regions were the only places to get good rains, with Beltangady, Guruvayanakere and Ujire regions experiencing light showers. Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk received some rains on Thursday evening, while some places within Puttur taluk got showers.
Babu Moolya (53), a resident of Perady village in Beltangady taluk, was injured after lightning struck. His house too suffered extensive damages in the incident, as the foundation of the house developed cracks, wiring was burnt, clothes were charred, and tiles were shattered. A tree standing next to his house got split because of the lightning. As it was government holiday, no revenue department officials visited the spot till late evening on Thursday.
Rains were also reported from Kodagu district late evening on Thursday.
