Mangaluru, Aug 16: "The government has decided to observe the 107th birth anniversary of former chief minister D Devaraj Urs as the ‘day of backward classes’. Also, an award will be given away to a prominent personality from backward classes for their contribution to society," said Minister of Social Welfare Department and Backward Classes Welfare Kota Srinivas Poojary.
Addressing a press meet at the deputy commissioner's office hall here on Tuesday, August 16, he said earlier the state awards were given away in the banquet hall of the Vidhana Soudha in the name of Devaraj Urs. But, now the government has decided to award achievers even at the district level, he said.
On August 20, district in-charge minister and deputy commissioners of various districts will give away the awards in their respective districts. A team headed by the district administration will select the eligible candidates for the award.
As of now, the selection process of the candidates is on. The selection committee consists of officials from Kannada and Culture Department, Backward Classes and other departments.
In the district, the birth anniversary of Devaraj Urs will be observed from August 20 to 22 for three days in the town hall, he added. The district in-charge minister will launch this programme in the afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr Kumar and R S Narayan were also present.
