Mangalore, Apr 11: Almost the entire coastal Karnataka, which experienced cloudy weather since Sunday April 10 morning, soaked in rains in the evening. Rains brought relief from scorching heat. At the same time, uprooted trees and lightning also created havoc at several places. In addition to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu district too got good rains.
Nagaraj Kulal ((32), a native of Hebri Hetturke Madaga, died after a tree got uprooted on the motor bike he was riding, at Jadkanmakki in Hebri Nadpal. Kulal was taking Ganapati Naik (40), his co-worker in masonry jobs, to drop him off at his home in Someshwar, when the incident occurred. A heavy branch of a tree got snapped and fell on their vehicle, when they were a little distance away from Ganapati’s house. While Kulal died on the spot, Ganapati Naik, who was injured, was admitted into a hospital. Kulal is survived by wife and three children.
A person was injured due to lightning. A house near Kundapur suffered damages after a tree fell on it. Power supply and telephone lines got snapped in many places in Sullia taluk. A buffalo, which was grazing near Jamadagni Tank of Kakkuinje near Halady died of lightning.
The city received only some drizzle, while Bantwal, Sullia, Beltangady, Puttur, Karkala, and Kundapur taluks experienced widespread rains. The annual festival of Polali Goddess Raja Rajeshwari Temple is under way, that it is customary to get some rains during this festival, and this year was no exception. At Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple in Puttur, the temple flag was hoisted on Sunday morning. Here too, people have come to believe that some rains are experienced during the car festival here every year.
