Mangalore: Elusive Undertrial Kalia Rafiq Finally Arrested

Mangalore, Apr 10: Undertrial prisoner Mohammed Rafiq alias Kalia Rafiq, a resident of Bappayithota, Uppala has been arrested by the Kadri police.


A few days ago, he had escaped from the police while being taken to appear in the Hosadurga court in Kasargod.
 
Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested him from a private hospital in Kadri where he had been admitted.

Kalia is an accused in many theft and dacoity cases. It is said that he had given a slip to the police many times.
 
On Sunday March 6, Kalia and his associate Riyaz, a resident of Periyatadka, were being brought from Chikmagalur jail by the Chikmagalur police to a Kerala court, via Mangalore. But they escaped while waiting for the bus at the KSRTC bus stand in Mangalore.
 
However, the next day, on Monday March 7, the Scorpio the two were travelling in turned turtle near Naykapi near Kumble and hit an auto rickshaw. Four passengers in the rickshaw were critically injured. Those who were in the Scorpio tried to escape, but were caught by the local people. Riyaz was handed over to the police, but Rafiq managed to flee. Lethal weapons were found in the Scorpio.
 
Reportedly, Rafiq underwent treatment for his injuries in Puttur. But when the police rushed to the hospital, he had already fled. After that he disguised himself and continued his treatment in the city, where he was finally caught.
