M'lore: Woman Stopped at Kozhikode Airport for Carrying 'Karnataka' Passport!

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 9: Reportedly, Nishat Khaleel, a lady from Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district, suffered at the hands of the officials of Kozhikode airport, because of their unreasonable attitude. She was to visit Oman to meet her husband and daughter there but the officials did not allow her to undertake the journey.

After reaching Kozhikode by train from Bhatkal with her son, Naufal, the lady went to the airport there to board Air India flight that was scheduled to leave at 11 am on Thursday April 7. Giving details, Naufal said that the officials there pointed out that the passport was from Karnataka. When Naufal commented that it was an Indian passport, and that there was no separate passport for Karnataka, the officials, who heard him, kept aside the passport without assigning any reasons for not allowing the woman to proceed to board the aircraft.

"They told us that they would return the passport only if a statement in writing was made to them that we have not committed any wrong," Naufal explained.

Naufal said he resisted the demand, pointing out that it was the officials who had committed the mistake, and that he had no reason to give such a letter. The officials then told him that they would confiscate the passport. "I had to come back with my mother, because of the non-cooperative and high-handed attitude of the airport officials," Naufal added.

He said the airport officials were not in order in stopping his mother from undertaking her journey to Oman. He revealed that he plans to hold discussions with other people, and decide about the further course of action.

Apparently this person is not only a rabid communalist and unspeakably biased but also is totally ignorant. For your kind information a passport is issued by the AGENCY THAT REPRESENTS THE INDIAN STATE AND NOT A STATE GOVERNMENT.

Seconldy an Indian national from any state is allowed to use any airport from any state to go abroad there is no written or wrtitten rule that stops a person from any where. Thirdly people choose flights based on convenience and cost. The immmigration officer has no bsuiness to question anyone why a person flies from a particular airport. for your information once I landed at Kochi for business reasons and the ignoramus immigration questioned why I had landed at kochi. I did gave him a reply only not to waste more time and go about my business for which I had come to Kochi, if I had time I would have have ensured that he did his duty and not harassed passengers for no reason.

These stupid people with that parochail mentality do not like people from Karnataka coming to Kerala whereas they are filling all the cities, towns and villages of Karnataka without any qualms
So Mr Shetty please keep your jaundiced communalism to yourself and do not pollute this page which is meant for intellegent and wise discussions and not communal rants from sick people like you.

Sorry Nisha Khaleel for your stopage at one of the Kerala Airport. But there are two question I would like to ask you, first of all why did you travel to Kozhikode Airport where as you can get Muscat Direct Flight from Mangalore which is much closer to Bhatkal. Secondly, since it is mentioned that Passport being issued by Karnataka instead of India, is not there duty to stop you at our native place rather than put you in trouble at Oman. You would have been in big trouble had you travelled to Oman and Oman Immigration would have rejected your visa stamping due to this non sence

To add on to this, i have seen myself how the Airport officials treat the uneducated people when they come down from gulf. some passengers are unable to fill the embarkation card. They look for someone to fill up the form. and if they fall in the hands of the airport officials, they take money for filling up a small form which hardly takes 2 minutes. just looting people. very corrupted staff at the indian airports.Travel agents or airline (cabin crew) should take care of such people. they should announce on the flight itself to fill up the form before getting out of the flight.

If you ask Keralites in Gulf, which Country they belong to, most of them will reply that they are from Kerala coz' for them their Kerala is a separate country by itself (afterall God's own country). Maybe these Airport officials are under the impression that even Karnataka has become a Country...

Everyone knows about Bhatkal and it is natural for an officer to suspect a passenger travelling to khozikode from bhatkal to fly abroad, bypassing Mangalore airport.

It looks like the story is incomplete. It is not clear who was arrogant !!. I donot think an airport staff will unnecessarily pull on problems on himself that too by refusing travel to a lady passenger on such flimsy grounds.
Further, when I go through the various comments herebelow, it appears we are hasty in judging the situation or the persons. If anything goes wrong by not questioning the passengers- then also we blame the same staff!! They have to make many querys and checks ( some of them may be unpleasant to the passengers) for the security reasons. It is our duty to cooperate with them . Respecting/obeying the system will not make us dwarf.

I have gone through this experience myself because my passport also is issued in Bangalore. I guess being rude to outstation passengers is a pre requisite to become a immigration officer.
These guys simply try and irritate the passengers to make money.

Bravo mother and son - that is called guts! I too have very often experienced the arrogant behaviour of these immigration officers - most of whom are promotees (Earlier Upper Division Clerks) by virtue of thier seniority / Reserved quota. They cannot speak English and putting them in International Airports to deal with multi national passengers is disgusting. Immigration officers in Europe / US are tough no doubt - but they know thier job and go about it professionaly. In India what I observed is that they are Jealous and petty minded. Moreover they try to show their power with the low wage earners / semi literate workers. One Officer in M'lore asked me why I am travelling from M'lore airport when my home of record in the PP was different - I asked him to show me the rule that I have to embark / disembark from the address mentioned in the PP - some half baked North Indian Bloke he was.

it is clear in the above case that Officials wanted to show their attitude rather investigation, Most of the times it happens with us when we are coming back home on vacation, nearly 90% of the people give them the money they asked for and will leave because they were in hurry to meet their families.

Indian govt have to keep CCTV cameras on Passport Control, Custom clearing to stop these officials in taking bribe.

Sorry to hear fate of these passengers.
Let me share my experience at this airport some five years back. I took a direct flight from Kuwait to attend my friend's ordination on 26/01. Since my relative was to join me directly from Mumbai, I did not rush for the immigration clearance though I was seated at first row.
At the counter, immigration official asked me why I am coming to Calicut while my residence is in Mumbai and all this in native language. I pretended as if I did not understand anything (for last 25 years I am working with "INDIANS" and as such I know a few other languages to survive). He left the counter without assigning any reasons only to come with another person. Atleast that person spoke in (M)English at which stage I took out the invitation. Then they both discussed and asked me in what way the would be priest is related to me and why I took this route. I told them that he is my friend and that my passport did not bar me front entering India from this airport. At this stage they relented and allowed me to proceed after giving a nasty look.
Hence, we need to have 'educated' officers at all points.
