Bantwal, Apr 7: A woman committed suicide by consuming phenyl owing the torture by her husband, being reported from Netla in Mudnoor village, near here on Wednesday April 6.

Hajira, the daughter of Abdul Khader was married-off to Mohammed Hameed, resident of Maddadka in Beltangady taluk in 2007.  Meanwhile, Hameed left to work in a Gulf country after a few months.  He continued to torture her mentally by calling her from abroad.  Hameed has told her that he had married a woman in Gulf and threatened her to commit suicide by consuming poison.  Hajira has informed her parents all about this and committed suicide by consuming phenyl on Wednesday.  Hajira was taken to a private hospital in Mangalore in critical condition and breathed her last on Wednesday evening.

Vittal police registered a case in this regard.

Hajira’s father Abdul Khader alleged that the in-laws of his daughter were harassing Hajira over dowry issue.  She had arrived to her parent’s house 7 months ago along with her three-and-a-half-year-old child, when Hajira could no more bear the mental torture.  Abdul Khader also complained to the police that Hajira’s in-laws had demanded to bring Rs 2 lac and Hameed would cause mental harassment by making overseas calls, owing to which his daughter has committed suicide.
