Sullia, Apr 7: Relating to the recovery of the headless body of a two-month old child in Subrahmanya at Kumaradhara river bank on Monday April 4, the policemen have taken into custody a couple from Kumta. The couple, in deviation of their earlier claim, have admitted that the child was theirs. However, they insisted that they had not killed the child, but that it had died of sickness, and that they had buried it by digging a pit on the river bank.
After the rickshaw drivers expressed apprehension about the fact that the child was not with the couple after they visited the river bank, the Subrahmanya police had interrogated them. The couple had then said that the child was of a relative, and that it had been returned to its parents. They had also produced papers to prove that they had recently married. However, after the couple left Subrahmanya on April 4, the body of the child was recovered in a decomposed state.
A police team from Subrahmanya, which visited Karwar to investigate the case, arrested Shekhar and Nagaratna from there. They were brought to Subrahmanya on Wednesday night. They said that they used to visit Subrahmanya often to get relief from the frequent ill health of their child. The couple also claimed that the child had lost its life during their recent visit, and that they decided to bury it here.
