Beltangady, Apr 6: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, vehemently opposed setting up of any industry that is harmful to environment, in the district. At the same time, he announced that the government is prepared to extend tax rebates to units engaged in manufacture of jute bags as an alternative to plastic bags.
Pelamar was speaking after inaugurating the planning and administrative block, which is part of the multi-purpose resource and training centre building of Nagarika Seva Trust at Guvuvayankere on Tuesday April 5.
While hailing the efforts of Nagarika Seva Trust towards environmental conservation, he said that the government has banned use of plastic bags in temples, and that it is proposed to replace plastic bags with jute bags in phases. Palemar added that the farmer should be highly respected, and it will not help his economic condition if the regard we have for him remains on paper.
Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji of Kemar Sandeepani Sadhanashram, stressed for an apolitical movement to save environment, as he felt that those who deliver speeches about environment conservation do not have genuine concern for the same in practice.
Mangalore Urban Development Authority chairman, Dr B Madhava Bhandary, inaugurated the hostel building. MLA, K Vasant Bangera, presided.
Priest, U K Abdul Aziz Darimi from Puttur Kallega, priest of Holy Redeemer Church Beltangady, Fr James D’Souza, former legislative council chairman, B L Shankar, zilla panchayat president, Shylaja Bhat, and a number of other dignitaries and officials were present.
Building architect, Satyaprakash Varanashi, and engineer, Sampatratna Rao, were honoured on the occasion. Nagarika Seva Trust president, K Somanath Nayak, welcomed. Secretary, Jayaprakash Bhat proposed vote of thanks. Directors, Rajiv Salian and H B Mohan Achar, presented the programme.
