Mangalore, Apr 5: ‘Chocolates,’ an original short-story in Konkani by Edwin J F D'Souza (and translated by him into English) will be published in the Special Collector's Edition of Reader’s Digest. The work has also appeared in Indian Literature published by Sahitya Akademi.

This short story, originally published in ‘Raknno’ and then in Nagari script in ‘Jaag’ is an addition to Edwin’s many short-stories which have found their way into English, Hindi, Kannada and of late in Kashmiri.

His ‘A  Cup of Hot Coffee’ which was published on August 25, 1991 in ‘Deccan Herald’ was published in Konkani in Raknno on July 22, 1993. The English original was spotted by Khuswant Singh and Neelam Kumar and appeared in ‘Our Favorite Indian Stories’ published in 2002 by Jaico Books. ‘Dev, Divll ani Rogath’ was translated into Hindi as ‘Bhagwan, Mandir Aur Lahoo’ and published in ‘Samakaleen Bharatiya Sahitya’; ‘Bethlehem’ was published in Indian Literature and ‘A Collar For Moti’ published in ‘Prateechi’ – A Literary Digest of West Indian Languages (1992-1993) by Sahitya Akademi.

Very interestingly, the late M P Prakash, a politician, scholar and  litterateur translated and published Edwin’s ‘A Cup of Hot Coffee’ into Kannada as 'Sudu Suduva Bisi Kaapi,' ‘Chimpanzee’ into ‘Asayakaru’ and ‘Moti-k Ek Paato’ into ‘Korallu Patti.’

Dr Aziz Hajni, an acclaimed linguist of the University of Kashmir recently translated ‘Ek Kop Hunoni Koffee’ into Kashmiri language, which will be published soon in an anthology.
