Bantwal, Apr 4: The fly over at B C Road, which was recently opened for thoroughfare, and where certain works are yet to be attended to, was witness to the first accident on it since it was opened, late night on Friday April 2.
A Scorpio vehicle, which apparently was driven at high speed, hit the protective wall at the end of the fly over, and got overturned due to the impact. Reportedly, four persons, who were travelling in the vehicle, abandoned it there and scampered to safety.
Seats inside the vehicle were seen to have been removed, and coir ropes used for tethering the cattle were found in gunny bags inside the vehicle. This has given rise to the speculation that the vehicle belongs to an organized gang of illegal cattle traffickers, and that the vehicle was driven at high speed because of the apprehension that someone was chasing them.
In all probability, the driver of the vehicle was new to the terrain. As the vehicle approached the end, he must have seen that the end of the fly over where it meets the road has not been properly finished. As the vehicle was at high speed, he would have turned the vehicle to avoid violent heave, and in the process, hit the protective wall.
The incident occurred in front of the town police station here. But no on has so far filed any complaint about the accident, and the policemen have taken the vehicle into possession.
