Mangalore, Mar 30: Samanvaya in co-ordination with Sahodaya Bethany Mahila Okkoota D K conducted a day’s programme on Tuesday March 29 on ‘Good Governance through Civic Education’ at Sahodaya Bethany Seva Kendra, Bendore. Shobha, president of Sahodaya Bethany Mahila Okkoota welcomed the gathering and gave away an introductory message on the topic and invited the guests to the dais.
Rev Dr Ronald Cutinha, director of Samanvaya was the chief guest and trainer of the programme. In his introductory speech he explained in a simple manner, with examples, that development should take place from one’s home and then it should spread around. Development does not need to destroy the beautiful nature but it should take place allowing the nature to grow along simultaneously. Thus he made the gathering totally attentive and switched over his talk to the main topic. He impressed the audience that the good governance begins from home, by the head of a family and his partner towards their own home and children. There should be transparency in all what parents do towards their home and children so that children grow up imbibing the good upbringing which they inherit. This is the beginning of good governance which should gradually spread around to create a good society.
Dr Cutinha explained the gathering point wise on what is governance, royal governance Vs democratic governance, where should good governance exist, three parts of good governance, objectives of good governance, characteristics of good governance, methods leading to good governance, approved facilities available to improve the governance and means to ascertain the level of good governance. Most of the participants were from rural areas and keenly participated in the entire session and gained knowledge for the first time. The power point presentation made it easier for the participants to understand and accept their own ignorance about the need for the good governance and how effectively they can influence people to claim their rights. In fact the participants were so enlightened by the talk that their immediate comment was that they desire good governance but never understood that it is possible through their participation. Thus the programme was an ‘eye-opener’ to the people and will be useful to influence others. The audience consisted of representatives of various social service organizations serving in nearby Panchayats and members of Sahodaya Bethany Mahila Okkoota.
Along with Rev Dr Ronald Cutinha, Shobha, president, Manjula, secretary of Sahodaya Bethany Mahila Okkoota, Padmini, president, Sanchi Trust, Sr Prema Gonsalves, coordinator and counsellor of Sahodaya Bethany Seva Kendra, Sr Lydwin, counsellor and Harini, project co-ordinator of Urban Research Centre(R) were seated on the dais. Mrs Manjula proposed vote of thanks. There was an encouraging participation of nearly 50 people in the programme which received great appreciation. They thanked Dr Cutinha and requested for more such sessions for their benefit.
