Udupi: Jail Warder Held for Accepting Bribe

Udupi, Mar 29: Suresh Babu, working as warder in the district jail at Hiriyadka, was arrested by the Lokayukta police on Monday March 28. He was held while accepting Rs 5,000 for helping under trial prisoner, Santosh Poojary, to get admitted into a hospital.

Poojary, working in a truck in Maravante near Kundapur, was arrested for not appearing in the court after summons were served on him. He was in the jail since about a month. The truck owner, Navin Channayya, had recently met Poojary in jail, when the latter requested Navin to arrange for his anticipatory bail.

On March 25, Navin came to the jail and met Suresh Babu. Babu promised to arrange for Poojary’s admission into the hospital, if a sum of Rs 5,000 is paid to him by way of bribe. Navin complained to the Lokayukta police. The warder was held while accepting the bribe of Rs 5,000 near Hiriyadka Cross.

Deputy superintendent of police, Prabhudev Mane, inspectors, C E Timmaiah and B P Dinesh Kumar, as well as other personnel were involved with the operation.
