Mangalore, Mar 28: A cargo ship named ‘Al Afeel’, which had set sail from the Old Bunder here with a load of various items meant for Lakshadweep, sank about ten nautical miles off the coast in Arbaian Sea on Sunday March 27. All the five crew members of the ship were saved.

The ship, owned by Jaffer Sadiq, had begun its journey at about 1.30 pm on Sunday. Water started entering the ship by the time it covered ten nautical miles from the port. Although an emergency attempt was made to pull the ship back to the port with the help of two fishing boats operating nearby, it sank.

The value of the ship has been estimated to be around Rs 30 lac, while goods worth about ten lac rupees were loaded onto it. The port office sources said on Sunday night that they had received intimation about the accident over phone, but written information was yet to be filed.
