Udupi, Mar 24: Lokayukta police arrested a government officer working in a sub-treasury office at Brahmavar on Thursday March 24.
The policemen arrested government officer N M Shivashankar while accepting a bribe Rs 16,000 for clearing a bill related to Rukmini Shedty Memorial National Government First Grade College, Barkoor, near here, on Thursday.
Shivashankar had allegedly demanded 1 percent for clearing the bill of Rs 28 lac for the month of March 2011 and consented to accept Rs 16,000. Lokayukta policemen led by investigative officer B P Dinesh Kumar arrested Shivashankar while accepting the bribe of Rs 16,000 from Barkoor College principal Rajashekar Hebbar.
Lokayukta officers gathered information on Shivashankar and learnt that he was demanding bribes for approving the UGC pay and guest lecturer’s honorarium and would approve the bills only after receiving the bribe from various school, college, and government employees since the past 5 years. The conversation between Rajashekar Hebbar and Shivashankar was recorded as pre-planned to lay a trap.
Mangalore Lokayukta SP D S Jagamayyanavar, ASP Dr Prabhudev B, C E Timmayya, K H Dilip Kumar and policemen Divakar Suvarna, Divakar Sharma, Ramachandra Bhat, Shobha, Sridar G, Umesh H, Shivaraya Billava, Santhosh, Ashok, Lakshidar Seti, were involved in the operation.
Shivashankar is under judicial custody and further investigations are underway.
