Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (SP)

Karkala, Mar 18: Sumitra Prabhu (70), a resident of Tellar here, was relieved of her nine-sovereign gold ornaments valued at about Rs 1.50 lac by thieves who claimed themselves to be policemen. The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday March 16. A Karimani chain weighing five sovereigns, and a gold chain weighing four sovereigns, were stolen in this way.

When Sumitra Prabhu was walking past Corporation Bank’s ATM in the town, three young men and a woman stopped her. They suggested to her to keep her ornaments in her bag, because of the threat posed in the town by chain snatchers. When she questioned about their identities, the men said they were policemen. The woman told Sumitra Prabhu that she too had abided by the police advice and kept her ornaments in her bag. As soon as she took out the ornaments from her neck, the strangers offered to safely pack them in a paper, took the ornaments, and handed over to her a lump of paper. They warned her not to open her bag till she reaches home, as thieves can strike anywhere anytime.

After reaching home, Prabhu opened her bag and the lump of paper, which contained only sand. A complaint in this connection was filed in the town police station here.
